… or don’t use AE to render to DVCPROHD. I’ve found that the process is buggy.

I use AE to render to the Animation codec, then use QT Player to export it to DVCPROHD.

A problem is the change in perspective of the items close to camera: they slide by each other. You cannot change this without a reshoot. All you can change in this clip is the Z-axis rotation. I don’t think you can track and stabilize it in AE because of the tracking motion, but you might be able to track and stabilize in Syntheyes, or track in Syntheyes, use it to make an AE camera then use expressions to counter the Z-axis rotation, and maybe some motion.

By the way, it’s not so bad. It’s not dead-steady either, but if you nail the Z-axis rotation, you should be fine. And, in my opinion, a badly-weighted steadicam would just introduce rotation, not this, which is Y-axis motion. If you’re using a JR, that’s the operator’s body problem: not smooth enough. I could be wrong.

Regarding issue 2, run your mouse over the footage and see what the info panel shows. If the black of the background is the same as the black of the dark table (for instance), you can’t key out the black BG without losing the table (for instance). You need to mask out the black BG manually, which is called rotoscoping. The set should have been lit with keying in mind.

I’m the Penn Jillette of motion graphics.

Really — we’re stuck with frame rates. Is it too much to expect that there would be a limit on the smoothness of motion? Watch movies, and look at pans. Are they really that smooth? We’ve learned to accept it. Which Bourne movie had “paging Alberto De Piento?” Ultimatum? There’s an aerial shot with some nasty judder right after that scene. Also, the main title to Inside Man (Spike Lee) had some nasty judder. Find some more examples, and the client shouldn’t mind. And if they haven’t noticed it, keep those examples just in case.

Misdirect! Misdirect! Add little detail movement somewhere else! Make them read something that’s not moving!

Duplicate your CC sphere layer and make one show the outside of the sphere, make the other show the inside (in the effect settings). Place the solid in between those layers. Don’t use 3D layers.

You could also draw a polygonal shape layer to be used as a track matte for the footage.

    Y’know …

… I spoke too soon. Yes — import your well texture into AE, then drag it into a comp, then apply CC cylinder to that layer. Give it a go.

Search the COW for “page turn” and “book”. This sort of thing has been discussed before.

However, I’d find a 3D animator to do it for you if you actually want the book to have depth. Page Turn is meant as a transition effect, so you may come upon its limitations pretty darn quickly.

    You’ve discovered the limits of AE’s 3D.

    Use MAX.

Thanks for the tip, Jon. It’s a new workflow for me, but I’ll try it next time.
