You can make a circular solid or shape layer and set it to always face camera (layer>transform>auto-orient), so it appears spherical. Add a radial ramp for shading.

Send me your project. No need to send sources … just the AEP.

Can I get a screencap of the AE project, timeline, comp window? I want to see what effects are applied, cameras, that sort of thing.

Yes, like Print Screen. So we can see what you’re working with.

I guess we need more specific information.

I’m assuming you tried this with the grid effect disabled, so it’s a Particular issue.
Are you looking at the active camera that you created? Are you in a top view, or a custom view?

    Got a screengrab?

    Try precomposing the grid solid.

    … and:

    Tried soft light/hard light mode?
Tried using noise or fractal noise as a luma matte to degrade the text?
Tried using a bit of roughen edges?
    Tried really lowering the opacity/contrast?
Have you studied reference photos to know your goal?

.. and unless they’ve changed something, AE prefers it when res matches magnification when RAM previewing.

(i.e. preview at 1/4 res and 25% mag, or 1/2 res and 50% mag.)

So the inside of each sub-comp is a still? No motion in there?

If that were the case, you should pre-render each sub-comp as a still. Why re-render a still effect on every frame?

April 20, 2010 at 2:42 pm in reply to: Flower bloom logo reveal, any tips?

We need to be more specific — think like an effects person, not a client.
What do you want the logo to do?

    – unfold in 3 dimensions? (get Forge Freeform (or CS5) or a 3D app)
    – undistort in 2 dimensions? (use puppet tool or one of AE’s distortion tools, possibly combined with scale)
    – be undistorted, but be revealed by a mask that increases in size and shape (animate a mask, combined with scale)

You might want to do this in parts, where parts of the logo reveal themselves at different rates. You might also want to animate this in one comp, then drop that comp into another and apply Posterize Time to get the stop-motion look. Study timelapse videos of flowers.

    Anybody else?
