I found a way to get the fussy program to accept downloaded subtitles. For subtitles, I use a free program called Subtitle Workshop. It’s simple but very effective, and I love using it to create subtitles.
Moreover, I had this same problem when downloading movies. I had a .SRT subtitles file, and Architect Pro 5.0 would not have it. I tried opening the .SRT file with Subtitle Workshop, then clicking save as, then choosing “DVD Subtitle” from the list. This saved the file as .SUB, but again, Architect did not like it and kept throwing dialogue boxes everywhere.
I then saved (using Subtitle Workshop) as a DVD Subtitle System, which saves them as a .TXT file.
This worked! It turns out that because Architect likes people to use their own way of adding subtitles, it’ll only accept .TXT files that have all the time codes etc. This works wonderfully, and acts as though you did all the hard work!

Hope this helps!
