Perhaps a firewire repeater, with it’s own power supply, between the deck and the computers would help isolate the damage.

Are you sure that FCP 6 has applescript support? I asked an Apple rep this question, and he said no.
It’s not listed under What’s new in FCP6, or under Tech Specs. Soundtrack Pro 2 lists that it is scriptable from Final Cut Pro 6, but I don’t think that means FCP is scriptable.

Often the installation discs for the program have an uninstall option, often found by unclicking “easy install” and selecting “pick programs to install”, and that will usually do a good job of removing all the related files.
If not, the program manufacturers website will usually have instructions on removing a program.

You have to click on the clip to mess with the image in a browser view, and you have to double click on the image to do those things in the viewer.
It doesn’t seem like much of a difference.
Did you know you can scrub the clips in the browser, using the scrub tool (shortcut hh)? Maybe that will help some.

I had a lot of trouble with HDV from a JVC camera. I would lose 7 seconds or so at every point where the camera was shut off. I think it has something to do with the way JVC terminates the data stream.
I also experiences problems such as yours, which I attributed to dropout on the tape.
My computer is also not that fast, so I beleive that may contribute.
I finally accepted that I would lose seconds around the camera shot end point, so I had the crew give adequate pre and post roll around the shot. Sorry I don’t have a better suggestion, but the HDV stream seems problematic. I have heard that Sony causes fewer problems, but you seem to have the same problems with either setup.

Walter Murch spent 2 years editing and doing sound work for Apocalypse Now, and he spent six months re-editing and doing sound work for Apocalypse Now Redux.
So the absolute answer to your question is: it all depends.
If it’s a low budget movie, the shots probably don’t match well, shots are missing, and you have very few notes to go by, so give yourself lots of time, at least 12 weeks.
