  • Break-ups in the middle of capturing an HDV tape

When I capture an HDV tape, FCP automatically breaks up the footage into short clips even though there was no timecode break. Most of the break-ups happen in the middle of a sentence so that I lost part of the sentence. How do I set the capture setting to go all the way through the tape?

Was this HDV shot on a JVC camera?

Yes, JVC HDV 100. It also happens to the tapes which was used in Sony HDV, though.

What format is the drive are you capturing to. If it is formated FAT32 then then that is the problem files on a FAT32 drive cannot be bigger then 2GB so it has to break it up into multiple files.

What camera or deck are you capturing from?

Each footage was captured using the camera which was used to videotape them. The JVC footage was captured with the JVC HDV camera. The Sony footage was captured with the Sony HDV camera.

The drive I am capturing to was formatted specifically for Mac and not FAT32. Any idea?

I had a lot of trouble with HDV from a JVC camera. I would lose 7 seconds or so at every point where the camera was shut off. I think it has something to do with the way JVC terminates the data stream.

I also experiences problems such as yours, which I attributed to dropout on the tape.

My computer is also not that fast, so I beleive that may contribute.

I finally accepted that I would lose seconds around the camera shot end point, so I had the crew give adequate pre and post roll around the shot. Sorry I don’t have a better suggestion, but the HDV stream seems problematic. I have heard that Sony causes fewer problems, but you seem to have the same problems with either setup.

In the log/capture window under the “clip settings” tab is the “create new clip on stop/start” checked? If so, that’s probably what’s breaking up the clips in your capture since there isn’t a TC break.

I have tried that, but unfortunately it does the same thing whether or not that option is checked.
