  • Thanks again for your help.

I don’t mean to keep this alive for no reason: the tough part for me was just getting to the simpler understanding … it is not actually a matter of an unsupported codec! It’s just the codec in the container …

I thought originally that there might be a couple of implementations of the codec; and I was getting a capture with something unsupported. It seems simpler: but it’s now beyond me technically as to why Movie Studio Platinum can open both types of containers, and both types of codecs, but not if the certain codec is in the certain container! (Meanwhile, Windows Media Player can play the file without a hitch!)

Thanks again for your help on this: I understand enough now to go forward without problems!

  • OOPS!!

Sorry to post spam: but it didn’t work as expected.

Movie Studio would open the file, and I began to edit and proceed; however, the video is corrupt! After a short time, the playback is slewed and full of artifacts. The preview is totally messed up.

I tried to save a short clip, and the output is also messed up.

So this turned out not to work!

I have cured my problem with Media Converter 8: I was finally able (after many attempts with many different converters) to convert the file to an mp4 and Movie Studio will finally import this file.

This was maddening! Windows Media Player would play the original recording (a screen recording, in H264, saved as AVI), but I could not convert the file until a dozen attempts! Finally I found the right settings in Media Converter 8 to create an mp4 that Movie Studio has now opened and is working with fine.

So again, sorry to post spam, but at this point I have uninstalled that codec, and after conversion I am working fine. I will be sure to record differently next time!

  • This solved my problem! Thanks so much for the direction to the codec.

I was having the same problem with Movie Studio Platinum choking on a codec in an AVI file; and I downloaded this codec and it works fine now!

I was ALSO having incredible difficulty converting the file: I tried several video converters and spent a few hours of computer time waiting for various conversions, but nothing worked.

With this code I can simply open the file normally … Thanks so much for that help!
