Depending on what you’re going for, I’ve seen guys on a shoestring budget have a lot of success with recording the audio after shooting the video.

This is a good idea, but you may be leaving too much to chance with the microphone. Sending some kind of standalone mic/recorder (like an H4) might be a better idea just because there aren’t as many wires to deal with, but even that could get complicated.

Something like the Zoom H4 might be a good, inexpensive bet for you. Or you could always use a computer a motu interface.

I’m not sure exactly what you want to do, but there are a lot of markets you can tap into no matter where you live. You can submit to festivals, get grants and other contracts or whatever. I don’t know how close the closest city is to you, but you might think about tapping into that. Most producers I know are always traveling to one place or another anyway.
There are lots of opportunities on the internets too.

Glad to hear he left before it was too late (ie there is bad sound or weird shadows or any other unprofessional messups on your finished product). I’ve been around guys like this a lot, I don’t know why they don’t go into a different profession if they’re not having fun making films and videos..
