I use a flat head for stills because it’s pretty easy to shoot really wide and edit the pix, but I have always used a proper bowl-type tripod, saves an immense amount of time and aggravation as you are aware. You’ll need a decent fluid head to go along with those tripod legs. Spend the money, you’ll be happier.

This has been covered a few times in the Business and Marketing forum, but typically if the rendering is done during the edit session you bill your regular rate. If the rendering can wait until after hours, we bill a modest machine time as it’s still wear-and-tear on your machine.

All in all, LOTS of testing before a gig with the exact setup you plan on using. We even have a startup/power up routine, and which applications you start in what order. Turn off everything you don’t need including virus protection. Anything to help success.

We use MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB.

Setup 1 for stream only (way too much lag to imag)
Wirecast 6, 2 BM miniRecorders SDI, USB3 to ethernet, encoding 2 720p streams (fb & yt), and local .mov record. Wirecast also does the video roll-ins & graphics. Still has processing overhead available. Here’s a pic.

Setup 2 for imag & stream
As above, but output a traditional switcher with embedded audio SDI to the wirecast laptop. The streamed show you can then overlay logos, or squeeze back the show, add a live cam for standup interviews, roll in some other content when the live event get boring – like looping PPT during dinner. Sometimes I’ll add a focusrite scarlet USB (either directly to laptop or thru the USB3 ethernet adapter that adds 3 ports) to grab a mix-minus from the soundboard. That way I don’t have a risk of copyrighted music going out and someone else monetizing.

Usually just work on the laptop screen and the whole thing is and octopus/spaghetti pile. Hmm… maybe I should cut some holes in the top of a roadcase to hide all that mess.

What I figured you would do, Todd, is to BNC your SDI signal for video, and then use a RCA to 3.5 mm plug for your audio direct out of your camera. This would allow you to have your XLR‘s for audio into your camera and have the camera convert the audio from whatever mic you are using into the camera. You could certainly come out of an audio mixer and convert XLR to 3.5 mm, but you mentioned about being mobile for a run and gun. The analog input audio on the samurai is very good.

I have a Samurai Blade https://www.atomos.com/samurai-blade and this may do what you need. Will take SD SDI in, and it has analog audio in, although only 3.5mm.

You can’t go straight to hard drive, as it’s a different type of firewire signal. You can go into a computer and record via QuickTime or similar.

A regular TV monitor? Why not just use the hdmi inputs and switch there?
I found this on amazon. There are also hard-switch-type for under $30. Otherwise probably a real switcher for about $900.+
