June 11, 2012 at 5:10 am in reply to: New Mac Pros next week!

Sorry guys, but the Mac Pro will NEVER ‘outpace’ the PC counterparts because Apple severely limits the number of PCIe slots and lanes. My HP Z800 has 6 PCIe slots with 3 x16 lanes. Mac Pro has only 4 slots with only 2 x16 and a x4 and x1(maybe x4, can’t recall). In addition, Apple limits the number of Ram slots so the new Mac Pro will be slower than its PC versions because the new E5 Xeons are Quad-channel which means you need 8 sticks of ram per CPU to run at full speed. I also have 8 SAS connections in my Z800 in addition to the 6 Sata.

Btw, Thunderbolt aka LightPeak is already out on PCs so that advantage is already gone; although, PCs have more PCIe slots so TB is not needed in the desktops anyways.

Last I checked, HP gives 25% off their Z800/Z820 line without asking.

June 11, 2012 at 4:58 am in reply to: how to get shuttle control back in cs6

Sorry, but the Shuttle uses all of a few horizontal pixels so it doesn’t increase ANYONE’s screen real estate in any significant way. Yeah, Avid people are used to keys only because that was how Avid was programmed, BUT guess what, Avid finally came around and realized that people want to use their mouse to navigate the software like every other NLE out there. Here comes along Adobe thinking that they know whats best for their customers and they just lost my 7 CS6 upgrades.

FYI, when I use the shuttle, I have my fingers ready to hit Q, W, I & O so I don’t have any spare fingers to rest over and constantly tap JKL & Shift.

And with MC editing, I use the shuttle and have my fingers ready to tap numbers 1,2,3,4 to make cuts and spacebar to stop & start playback. NOW Adobe completely broke that process because numbers don’t make cuts anymore and there isn’t any shuttle.

Keep hoping while everyone else is making Adobe the ‘standard’.

Having a BROADCAST monitor is NOT about Broadcast – it is about ACCURACY. Simple color correction on a regular monitor can and will make video look like crap. I know because my assistant accidentally changed the calibrated preset on my Eizo, and when I uploaded a video for the producer’s approval, she noted how people looked orange, and all I did was a simple CC. (I also have a Panasonic broadcast LCD fed via SDI from a Decklink Extreme which is slightly more accurate than my Eizo)

FYI, you do not use a broadcast monitor to make video legal – that is what SCOPES are for.

Also, the Aja Kona and BM Decklink are NOT about ‘broadcast’ – they are designed to get a TRUE video signal into a monitor.

July 3, 2011 at 4:41 am in reply to: VFX…in decline?

California is probably the absolute worst place for any business right now with far too much regulation and high taxes. The number of people and businesses leaving Cali each year is staggering (almost 2 million people in the last 10 years). Many are going to Texas and other southern states with no income tax such as Florida. Vfx for Hollywood is getting outsourced more and more but everything else is still going strong. Probably the best general skill set to have is AE, Photoshop, Illustrator and Cinema 4D.

I am close in age to you and only made the decision to jump into the video industry a few years ago. Since then, I have been learning everything from production to editing, motion graphics and Cinema 4D.

What about 6G SAS or 6G Sata connected to the SAS ports in a Z800 (dual 6-core, Areca 1680ix is full)?

Just be aware that the Bluetooth drops connection constantly. I looked into it as well but many users reported constant issues with the iPad dropping connection.

    FYI, the DreamColor is $2000-2500.

From my experience, I prefer the image quality from my Eizo CG243W more than my 1710w. However, for under $1000, look at the NEC PA241W-BK ($800) and add an i1 for calibration, but check NEC to make sure the i1 works with their software because this NEC uses hardware calibration.

December 25, 2010 at 3:51 am in reply to: Advice Needed for a Switcher

I need an all-on-one solution so I have a single point of contact for hardware & software support.

I have been researching the Panasonic HS-50 and that unit looks to be almost perfect for basic needs. Plus, its the only switcher I found under $20k that does 24p rather than 1080 60i, and its only $4,000.

But, the keyer and virtual sets in the Tricaster TCDX300 are almost worth the extra $10k; however, I would still be stuck with only 1080 60i and 720 60p.

I just remembered the new Panasonic AG-HMX100 which is only $5500 and does 1080 24p as well in addition to 8 XLR inputs, which is important for me. I think this switcher might be the one.

December 24, 2010 at 8:38 am in reply to: CS5 on MAC PRO Win7 FX4800 and GPU accereration.

The problem is you can only use another Quadro card with the FX4800 in order to use the hardware acceleration. Plus, I believe the FX4800 must be the #1 monitor in the Windows monitor configuration. Someone I know who teaches for AdobeTV has the FX4800 and a cheaper Quadro 275, and he stated that a 2nd Quadro is needed for these purposes.

November 21, 2010 at 11:22 am in reply to: Anyone here using the Matrox MXO2 Mini?

I have had the complete opposite results with a BM Extreme 3D and a Mini. I pulled one of the BM 3D cards from our server to test in my workstation and I didn’t come across any problems. However, I have had major issues with the Mini since I bought it a year ago although their drivers have been improved. The Mini still requires Matrox presets, and I found that using a PPro project with a Matrox sequence within it on another computer without Matrox software installed caused PPro to crash. I also learned that the Matrox MPEG2 codec cannot be played or edited without the Matrox software installed. And AE would crash unless the Mini was connected and powered on. If you saw how Matrox and Premiere interacted a year ago, you would wonder how a company could release such horrible drivers for ‘pro’ hardware.

However, I prefer Aja over all others whether it be converters or I/O cards. There is a reason why Kona cards are the industry standard.
