You would want an I/O device to Input footage into your system. This includes for example, transcoding DSLR footage to ProRes. Also up, down and cross converting footage. The Output displays what is in your timeline. It is highly recommended. There are also a couple of output only devices via Thunderbolt. AJA’s T-Tap is now shipping and Black Magic Design’s UltraStudio Mini Monitor will ship later this year.

I wish this technology was around 10 years ago!

You do not need FW to offload your footage. For tape, you need it. You can use USB. The PCD2 will eliminate the need to use your camera as a source.

The latest iMac is incredible. Look to add Adobe Production Premium CS6 to your toolkit. AVID MC6 can’t hurt either. With Thunderbolt, look at the AJA IOxt for I/O device.
You can add an eSata port to your iMac.

You have a lot of expandability with the Mac Pro. I would recommend the Nvidia Quadro 4000 graphics card. Get as much RAM as you can afford. Dell Ultrasharps for Computer monitor.
With PCIe you have different options for I/O devices. AJA Kona 3, LHi or LHe. External IO Express. Matrox External MXO2 or MXO2LE. The MAX version is a must if you do a lot of h.264 encoding for web or Blu-ray.

The only way this file can be seen by FCP is to export from Premiere using Adobe Media Encoder and create a ProRes file.

If you really want to see the true output, you must monitor it properly. The only way you can find out if the quality is good is to do an export and and look at the final delivery.

It makes sense. What you are seeing is normal behavior for your set up. Unless you properly monitor, you will not see what it actually looks like. It’s like driving down the road with Vaseline smeared on your windshield.
