Two options if iMovie doesn’t work.
1. convert the files with MPEG Streamclip.
2. Use a camera that is FCP friendly.

DVD-R format is MPEG-2. There is no way possible to export an MPEG-2 file for DVD use directly from FCP or any other software program. What you need to do is export a QuickTime Movie from FCP and drop that file into iDVD or Compressor. Based on your experience, iDVD would be a good place to start.
A year seems to be a very long time to research your findings. It can be done in seconds.

There is no tutorial that I know of. You can start by opening a 3D template and manipulating the settings.

A lot of factors are involved. First we’ll start with how large is your project file? What type of media are you editing, DV, HDV. Is your media on an external HD? Are there any filters applied to your media?
