ok, I have been trying to figure this out on my own for about a year, and I am finally breaking down to ask. Does anyone know the native video format for DVD material? MPEG2? MPEG4? Etc.? What I’m wanting to do it export a movie in FCP, and then NOT have to encode… any thoughts? suggestions? Thanks!

DVD-R format is MPEG-2. There is no way possible to export an MPEG-2 file for DVD use directly from FCP or any other software program. What you need to do is export a QuickTime Movie from FCP and drop that file into iDVD or Compressor. Based on your experience, iDVD would be a good place to start.

A year seems to be a very long time to research your findings. It can be done in seconds.

Using a basic search such as “How to make a DVD from FCP” you will find this. https://www.lafcpug.org/Tutorials/basic_export_files.html

Not possible any longer. Used to be able to export an MPEG-2 from FCP, but not in Studio 2. You need to go to Compressor to do this.

it’s the same difference any way. No matter where you do the encode, it still needs to be encoded to MPEG-2 whether that happens in FCP, Compressor, iDVD or other software.
