Do not manipulate your footage. Just change the TV to wide screen from normal.

All of the options suggested seem way over your head. It also sounds like the person who shot the footage is not very experienced.

By manipulating this footage, you are only going to make it worse.

Don’t take this the wrong way but you really need some education.

You are dealing with prosumer/consumer gear not broadcast. Obviously your picture quality is not going to as good as broadcast.

For your workflow, composite will be fine. You are still dealing with garbage in garbage out. If you had a high quality broadcast camera connected to your mixer via composite, it would look very nice.

You can not capture HDV via firewire to the DVCPro HD codec.

You will need an HD capture card and capture via HMDI or component.

Make a QuickTime Movie and drop that into Compressor. Now FCP won’t be tied up with Compressor does its work.

They are free on your Mac. iPhoto, iDVD and iMovie can do it. FCP can do it with a lot of creative control. You can use jpgs with FCP.

There also other 3rd party programs that can make slideshows for the Mac. Google slideshow and Mac.

Quality of photos are as good as the originals.

Always a good idea to export a self-contained movie of your speed changes.

Just like you said, on your model. There are no current DVD recorders that FCP will recognize.

I’ll bet you paid a lot for that DVD Recorder. Not because FCP could see it. The first units were very pricey.
