Good point, all software especially from Apple SHOULD work perfectly straight out the box on a .0 version, no bugs, no problems but it doesn’t, no software does. The public beta test every single piece of software released on the planet!

When working in native HDV, scene detection is always turned on because of the GOP structure, there appears to be no way round it because of the way HDV compression works.

I’m no expert but it seems to be true. If you want to use native HDV you will have to get used to it.

I doesn’t help, but it Just goes to show you shouldn’t upgrade on existing projects – FCP shouldn’t do this, but every major upgrade seems to cause chaos on previous projects for some people.

In response to the original question, Z1 and FX1 are great 16:9 DV cameras that offer HDV as well. In our experience the downconverted HDV images look better than the images shot on DV, the new FCP Production suite will make the downconversion even better. If you want to buy something now then get a Sony, if not then wait to see how the Panny Cam works, picture quality will certainly be more robust, but workflow remains an unknown quantity until people are actually using it, although the theory is very good. Also remember manufacturers release dates can slip back, especially when new technology is involved.

Apparently this is “feature” that you can’t turn off – scene detection is always enabled with HDV, check the documentation.

  • Simply put, you HAVE to reinstall Pro Apps after a clean install of Tiger, if you don’t do that, any problems you have are your fault! We did it and all is working very well, which is excellent considering it is a new OS.

I guess we’ll all know sometime this week how stable FCP 5 will be.

“So why is it okay for software companies to get away with it and so controversial to ask that they do the proper testing before they release it?”

It’s not OK, but it happens with virtually every piece of software released.
