Well you can certainly call the G5 Powermac a workstation now!
I’m looking forward to some independent benchmarks for these systems, especially how HD performance is improved. It’s certainly good to have the option of more horsepower. Even at the high cost of replacing all your PCIX cards.
I also notice they are still selling the DP 2.7.

What format is the footage?, what system to you have? etc etc We really need more details to be able to help.
Make sure your deck/camera has iLink downconvert set to OFF and the tape format is HDV not auto.
Then try HDV PAL 1080i easy setup, capture some material even though you see no picture in the log and capture window and see if it plays back on the timeline.

I’ve just done a similar job for a DVD release, Because of the large amounts of footage, I captured all the Digi material to the DV codec via FW on a Sony J30, I captured the HDV material downconverted to DV from the HDV deck.
I did the whole project in DV with the aim of recapturing to 10 bit for the online, however client was in a rush and he was more than happy with the DV quality, so we mastered back to Digibeta via SDI from our Blackmagic card. Quality was very good and the client was happy.
I’ve seen the final DVD and it looks great
However we were working with good quality footage with only minimal graphics and captions, if you have a lot of graphics and captions or you are going to broadcast, I wouldn’t recommend this route.

Good grief – of course your multicam isn’t great! FW400 is the bare minimum for performance, transfer to FW800 and you should see a difference

Just create an anamorphic DV timeline, you don’t have to resize it as FCP is very clever, however field order is wrong as HDV is upper and DV is lower. There’s probably a better way of doing it, but I apply the “shift fields” filter to the imported sequence, then render away!
I still can’t think why your .m2v would look bad from your HDV timeline!

I note you have a Kona 2 card. Simply create an 8 or 10 bit Uncompressed 1080i HD timeline, if your X-Serve can hadle the datarate, and drop in the finished HDV sequence. If both are set to anamorphic, the aspect ratio works fine, you can then render the timeline and output via HD-SDI to an HDCam or D5 Deck. Quality is great and has the added bonus of making any titles or graphics look a little better.
I know some people have noted an issue with levels on HDV, but so far when we have mastered back to HDV, it hasn’t happened. Probably more luck than judgement.
