It only does assemble edits as far as I remember.

What easy setup are you using?
Do you have deck control?
Is the camera set to 1080 or to auto?
Do you have i-link conversion set to “OFF”?

We use one and it flies with uncompressed HD – we just make sure as much as possible is backed up because without RAID 5 we are going to get a problem at some point!
I’m happy to take the risk for the lower cost – however having said that, Apples ProRes may just have changed the game as far as storage goes.

I use Livetype – it’s an incredibly powerful tool, shame it’s not fully integrated but once you’ve imported your captions then its easy enough to do roundtrip updates and it’s very reliable.
My clients love what it does!

As others have said – it’s very simple don’t upgrade and it won’t cost you a penny. FCP as it stands works fine and you can spend a year or two making money with it. Then perhaps you might budget enough for the paltry $500 it will cost you to upgrade.
Personally, as it stands, if Apple hadn’t offered any upgrade path at all, I’d STILL buy the whole suite again just to get those features and I’d make the money back in the first month!
