This is 5 layers of video, unrendered, all with colour correction applied including 3 different codecs 1080 XDCam HD 422, XDCam EX and 720 mp4 from a GoPro.

Using an 8 core 2008 Mac Pro with 8GB Ram and Ati Radeon 4870

[Benjamin Mullins] “Up until this whole X debate began I hadn’t used Premiere Pro in about 5 years. I read that big things had been done with it and thought I’d have a look. I dropped some 720p footage onto the timeline, added some colour correction and was able to play it back in real time without needing to render. I was very impressed by that. Obviously it needs to be rendered before or during export but that feature in itself is almost enough to switch (providing the basics are right as well). It kind of annoyed me that Apple touted X as having background rendering when it really doesn’t. It renders automatically, but requires user inactivity which essentially is the same as just hitting alt+R in FCP7.”

Yes but FCPX plays clips with CC and FX in realtime without rendering as well in much the same way as PPro. You don’t have to wait for clips to render before you play them – and the playback quality of clips is almost as good as the rendered files in most cases, even with heavy CC applied.

    Just threw this together

  • Yes it’s a shortcoming of FCPX, I cut and paste the segment into a new project, not ideal I know

[Tom Wolsky] “Why would you want to do that? I guess if that’s the way you edit. Good luck with that.

I hear that so often: That’s the way I edit. That’s the way I want it to work. People work that way wholly because that’s the way the tools they’re using work.

    “

I wouldn’t, I’m happy with the new trackless workflow, but lack of tracks is one of the most common complaints about FCPX, I just thought I would show that there is at least the vaguest of possibilities that a form of tracks could be implemented.

  • [Mark W] “1) Whats the best way to sync up the wide and close shots? At the moment I have the wide on top of the close so the wide is the default shot showing. I’m trying to figure out a way to see the presenter clap his hands together on both reels so I can line them up?

You could change opacity to 50% on the top clip, I take sync cues from the audio waveform though

    2) Whats the easiest way to cut between the close and wide shots? I have the wide on top of the close so that’s dominant. The audio I want is on the wide. Use the razor blade? When I tested the razor blade I noticed it’s cutting out the audio track on the wide shot which I don’t want to happen – so if I use the razor I need to unlink the clips.

You could use the razor blade, or you can position the playhead on the cut point and press “command B” to cut the track.I would have the wide on the bottom and the close on the top, although as you say you could “Detach Audio” if you wanted to keep the wide on top

    3) The lapel mic audio on the wide shot is currently mono only – how do change it to stereo?
    “

Select the clip and in the audio tab of the inspector there is a channel configuration setting

  • Actually I just found the secret keystroke that enables tracks in FCPX 🙂

  • [Gary Huff] “[Steve Connor] David, can you elaborate, what exactly stops you from doing the same thing in an FCPX timeline than you do in a FCP7 timeline?

Steve, perhaps you would like to re-read David’s comment that you yourself quoted?

[David Lawrence] “BTW, I’ve never said you can’t build a project like my example in FCPX. I’ve done it. My issue is that the constraints of the magnetic timeline make the process inefficient.”
    “

Yes I have and I’m still interested in exactly what constraints are making the process inefficient, is it the lack of tracks? is it connected clips?

  • Agreed, I used that one too, again an “open project in separate window” command is my next feature request!

  • I can’t imagine a “open Keyword collection in separate window” command would be beyond the realms of possibility. Worth putting in as a feature request, I just did.

I don’t find having multiple projects open a problem, it’s very fast and easy to navigate between projects. Not as easy as clicking on a tab, but not a huge inconvenience for me.

A plus though is the ability to skim through all my projects quickly in the project browser.
