[Michael Hancock] “At this point, I’d say either replace the older Avids with FCP and hope your editors can struggle through, or replace the FCP systems with new Avids.”
As I stated earlier, I already suggested replacing the Avid with FCP mainly because it is less expensive then the Avid, but it was shot down.
Currently there are 2 separate buildings, but the plan is to abandon this building and move our studios and Final Cuts to the other facility by the end of the year. (Yeah I know what date it is now).
They currently record to Beta SP and then digitize the footage into the Avid. We currently record to D9 and digitize to the Final Cut.
The cameras that will be going in the new facility are 2 Sony BVP-900 and 1 Sony BVP-950 running to the studio via Triax and going into a Panasonic AV-HS400 switcher via SDI and out of the switcher to 3 JVC D9 decks (1 Line cut and 2 ISO’s).
What we want to do is go semi tapeless and send the line cut to our SAN via Final Cut and a BlackMagic MultiBridge Extreme and then we would ISO the 3 cameras to the JVC D9’s as backup.
As you know the problem is incorporating the Avids into the situation so we can eliminate the digitizing step for both of us.
That is it in a nutshell, anything you can suggest is greatly appreciated.
Anymore questions, just ask.
Thanks again;

Thank you Michael.
I will suggest that to them.
Do you have any suggestions on my main issue?

I appreciate that, do you have any other suggestions?
My original suggestion to upper management was to replace the older Avids with Final Cuts (I shouldn’t be saying that to an Avid guy, but as long as I’m laying my cards on the table).
The problem with that is their 2 editors that are cutting the existing show don’t know Final Cut and they don’t have the time to get up to speed on it, because this is a daily show that they are putting together.
As I said we are bringing 2 companies together that both have existing shows. I need to come up with a way to integrate the two worlds, but still kind of keep them separate.
Projects will not be switching from editor to editor or system to system.
The other issue is that their 2 systems don’t even work together properly. As I said they have an Avid Adrenaline Media Composer version 2.8 and an Avid Meridian Media Composer Version 12.1.2. I believe the problem there is 1 is OMX and the other is MFX. I’m not 100% sure, I haven’t worked with Avid in about 12 years so I’m a bit rusty on it and how they run.
Again; any suggestions that you may have would be greatly appreciated.

[John Pale] “A workaround is to install the software codecs for the AJA Kona or Blackmagic Decklink cards, which are equivalent.”
Thanks John;
Installing the Blackmagic or Kona drivers sounds like the best bet to me. This will be a weekly situation.Don’t ask why but we are going to be digitizing a studio shoot directly a SAN using Capture Now in Final Cut, but because of an existing setup that we are coming into, the edit and final assembly is going to be done on Avid, so I need a solution that is faster then recording to tape and then digitizing but will accommodate both NLE’s

November 11, 2008 at 1:06 pm in reply to: Copying an effect from one clip or project to another.That sounds perfect.
I will have to remember to try it the next time I have the chance.
The problem is that our workflow does not require Motion that often and by the time I go back to it I have forgotten what I learned last time.Thanks again;

What are the conventional responses, because I’m having the same problem on 3 different systems.
All are Dual monitor systems with 8GB of Ram, 2 are 2.8Ghz Octocore and 1 is a quad core 2.5Ghz.
The Octocore systems are NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT and the other is a NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT.
I have 2 other Quad core systems that I have not tried it on, but I’m guessing will have the same problem.
Since it is more then one system I don’t think it would be the preferences.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

[Chris Borjis] “On2 makes the best .flv encoder hands down.”
Agreed except their tech support is not that great.
it seems that when installed on an Octocore Leopard system, it does not work with Cleaner 6 and I can’t get any help from On2 to resolve this issue.

There is a plugin or codec made by On2 Technologies call Filx exporter.
You can export to FLV directly from FCP or QT.There are several versions, but we have the exporter and it does a really good job and it is pretty fast also about 2 min for each min of video depending on your settings.
It only costs $199.
