Two references to a ‘Sow’s Ear’ almost simultaneously! May be a record…or perhaps we’re just showing our age.

MPEG is compressed…a lot. Plus, this one is encoded at a very low 5500 Kbps. Might be trying to make something out of a sow’s ear. Still, you would imagine that AE would at least be able to present it at the same quality as it plays in various players.

Then I think you were on the right track initially…dupe the footage layer, invert, then mask out what you don’t need with heavy feathering for falloff. You should be able to really adjust for the perspective issue with Corner Pin or similar.

Pretty sure it works on alpha channels, so if you dupicate your footage layer and rotoscope out all but what you want to reflect(the arms), the plugin should do it for you, and give you quite a bit of control as well.

Yep…could be something as simple as a small platform (plywood board)or something set at a strategic point at at a specific angle to allow the operator to simply move to the spot, set the camera on the board, shoot a clean plate, then at the moment he clones, quickly pick up the camera and start moving to the next platform. Of course you’d have to also rotoscope out the platform and whatever it’s mounted to, or more efficiently, have it out of frame so that it isn’t included in the shot, then have someone quickly set it in it’s spot as you approach with the camera.
Suffice to say, it requires some fairly serious pre-planning. If you watch these over and over, you start to see some flaws. But you REALLY have to be looking for them.

Nope…I’ve been soloing the pertinent channel, and it’s hovering at -30dB on the deck’s VU meter regardless of what I do. It was recorded low. I’ve already spanked the operator for it. As an alternative to caturing it low via firewire, and then boosting in edit, I’ve run the audio from the deck through an M-Audio Fast Track Pro that we have, and boosted the signal with the Fast Track so that it captures at -6dB. Problem solved.
