The details…
I was an Avid guy for a dozen years, and FCP since the Final Cut Suite came out, and am disappointed with Apple’s current commitment to FCP, so I’ve been putting in lots of time to try out Premiere Pro. There is much to love in PP. Below is a list of issues ranging from peeves to annoyances to deal breakers. I don’t doubt there are excellent workarounds and hidden buttons for many of these. I hope to hear about some.
– There’s no dupe detection.
– There’s no simple way to select all clips to the end of the sequence…annoying in long sequences. I’ve been inserting and deleting shots as a workaround.
– With snap on, clips snap into position, but the CTI does not, causing me to mouse somewhere close to where I want to be then add a jump to next cut keystroke to get where I really want to be….if I have the right tracks selected. Any better answers?
– When I put a sequence into the source monitor, I can’t edit the source clips into the timeline – only the sequence. I use this a lot in FCP and Avid.
– Also with sequence in source monitor, I can’t jump from edit to edit. VERY annoying.
– The keyboard setup has no search function, nor are the folders logical, so creating a custom keyboard is hellish. If I could find a list of all of the potential keyboard commands, it would help.
– When you extract or option-delete, the curser ought to move to the point of the cut. Just a nuisance really, but there is NEVER a situation where you want it to be where it was before deleting.
– Why can’t I extract a highlighted clip or clips? Why must I option-delete?
– Locate in bin is a pulldown, but there is no keyboard equivalent….right?
– There is no way to toggle between program and source monitors. I have a workaround that works 70% of the time, but still….
– Is there really no command to select in and out points for the clip you’re CTI is parked over??? I use that all the time….
– saving is slow and PP seems very comfortable disrupting your workflow for autosaves.
– Can I really only send one sequence at a time to Encore or Encoder??? I know I can send one at a time to batch, but come on…
– And in Encoder, can I choose more than one output option, or do I need to re-export if I want a small postable H264, an HD post and an uncompressed output, for instance.
– I’ve had MANY crashes. I’m sure they’ve been more painful than FCP crashes because I’ve got to learn whole new ways of troubleshooting. Still…lots of crashes. How stable has PP been for people.I’m truly not trashing PP. I’m actually rooting for it. It’s so close to being GREAT. If I can make peace with some of these issues, I may be able to switch.
Thanks in advance.
