  • You didn’t mention (unless i missed it) what codec the movies were in. If its something like H264 you might be hitting the “made up” frames that are inherently part of most types of compressed footage. Because you have skipped over the frames leading up to one of the made up frames, AE can have trouble resolving what that frame should look like.

  • You can still use them but watch out for color depth compatibility. Some of the older plugins and effects aren’t 32 bit clean. They will still work but they may clip or squash the colors in your 16bit or 32bit comps.

You might be able to use the new node control. Write an expression that tests the time parameter: if time is between thistime and thistime, then the mask node takes the attributes from some static value (a null say). Outside of those time parameters the null would follow along with the keyframes set in the animation.

  • That means the plug in is 32bit capable or “clean”. If you are working in a 16 or 32 bit comp and you use an effect that is not 32 or 16bit clean, all that has been processed in the stack to that point gets crushed to 8 bits. Depending on what you are doing this may or may not matter, but it may cause banding or clipping of colours or may reduce the quality of a key or a mask or matte or of a color correction.

Been seeing a lot of people experimenting with these (so there must be a tutorial somewhere because that’s what a bloom of examples usually follows). I got wondering if it might be a TP particle system (or XP) with tracers.

Hey Walter, is that AE2018 on Mac perhaps? I don’t see that feature in 2018 on win7. (a pickwhip for each attribute).
I’ve checked my columns and I can see the parent choice.
I do see it in 2019 PC however.

On another note related to Corner Pin. I’ve always found the AE corner pin way too soft. The CC powerPin creates a much sharper warp. They do work slightly differently from each other (CC has more features). I’m kinda shocked after all these years that the sharpness issue has never been addressed, but I suppose after spending good money on Cult, Adobe just let them carry the load while they focused on making icons even smaller.

  • While you may be able to create a hierarchy and constraints that link all of these correctly, I usually don’t have the time for the migraine that ensues. So I cheat!
I use simple expresso links that allow objects that are children of other objects to have positional and rotation relationships to yet a third set of objects – even getting attributes from their children (which is the basis for an Ik chain).
This way you can have a child inherit the rotation of an object that is not its parent or grandparent or connected to it in any way – all the while being dragged around by the parent.

Ditto for me – can you attach a link to the tut.? “Deform” is a pretty broad description and could be an effects category. AE would probably narrow the name down to something more descriptive if it was an effect. But it might be a third party one. Its not one of the original Cult effects is it? before adobe rolled most of them into AE (and maybe changed its name?)

  • Unless of course “parenting” has been removed from the colums list. You can add it in at the top of the layer settings. Right click to choose what columns show
