I go straight from SxS cards to DL disk. I put in a blank disk. I open up Clip Browser. I copy them straight to the DL DVD, then I burn it within Finder. I noticed that the Split button wasn’t working… is that due to me not transfering to a hard-drive first?

Well, you both have shown me to know your area and your clients. Believe it or not, I’ve got clients that don’t have high speed anything! They aren’t on dial-up, but close… they’re on satellite which I believe is 512. Your neck of the woods, my neck of the woods, Who do you want to see the video…

I asked only due to lack of knowledge, especially with the DL-DVD. Sony, especially, is fairly good at making sure you HAVE to use only Sony stuff with Sony stuff. I wasn’t going to assume I knew what kind of code they have on some of these files. Just didn’t know. Thanks for the info, though!

    Craig,
Makes complete sense. But then again, what is your work flow for a year down the road, when you will still want the .mov files? Do you still have to transfer back to a SxS card, then use the Transfer program so that it will be wrapped in .mov? Or will the Transfer Program work with the DL-DVD? Obviously I don’t have my EX1 yet,(giddy, giddy, its shipping to me now!) otherwise I’d test on my own. Thanks for the info.

Also something that I’ve heard but never tested nor seen, if your VTR is a lower end, and it only records in 1080i, we’ll say, and your shooting in 720p it can make things look messy… That is complete here-say, though. Never seen or tested but it makes theoretical sense.

As I recall, and I’ve got a horrible memory, but the BPAV folders do not have .mov files. Do they? Hence my question for the workflow and the SxS cards. If the folders have the .mov files then all is good. Otherwise all I see is transferring back to a card then using the Transfer to get the m4v files wrapped in .mov. Sorry but I’m still new to the EX thing.

For some that may be the purpose, but for some it is to help when they get stock footage from TimBukTu on one format but the rest of the project is all on XD at 1080i, 30fps, etc… It allows for it but that doesn’t mean that is what you want to do. The only reason I say HDV kinda messes that up is HDV cameras have few choices, if any, with the kind of footage you shoot. So you tend to be stuck with whatever that camera shoots in. Some have a few choices, some don’t. Less choices for you. That’s all.

    Clay,
I just purchased an EX1 as well so I’m no expert, but one of the things that I can tell you is, if you have a choice (which it seems you do) choose a format and use that for all cameras. Mixing a HDV kinda screws that up a bit, but if you are working with an HDV camera that doesn’t allow you to change format, for all intensive purposes I’d switch all my cameras to that format. Now saying that, if you are looking for a special look or something for a specific shot, then by all means change. But “normally” you keep all cameras on the same fps, progressive/interlace, shutterspeed, etc.. The reason I’ve found is it doesn’t make one camera stand out from others. You don’t want the viewer to say, “Hey, why does that one shot look jittery, while the others look perfectly smooth.” A colleague explained a long time ago, “The best camera work is that which the viewer never notices.”

I don’t mean to Hijack this thread but I am curious as to your workflow after putting everything to the DL-DVD. As a for instance, you’ve shoot, you’ve edited, a year down the road they want a re-edit. You pull out a DL-DVD. Do you have to then put everything back onto a SxS card, then re-import using the transfer method so it is wrapped in an .mov file? Or is there a way of getting it straight from the DL-DVD and it still be a .mov file?
