I know this is an old questions, but in case anyone else is looking for the fix:

I traced a photo in AI to make paths to animate in AE

Copy and paste your path in AE
Ctrl click the layer, select effects/generate/fill (or however you choose to apply effects)
In the effects properties select “All Masks”, or select ON depending on your workflow

This will fill your path.

downloaded “decompose” plug-in, but it got a bit squirrelly so I un-did it. Could have been user error but it messed up most of the motion in the layers.

Is there anyway to undo a pre-comp? I have a project in which I pre-comp’d layers and now I have decided that I want to parent other layers to layers within the pre-comp. No biggie if I can’t, but it would make it easier if I could.
