Alan, Try setting the “Trigger Mode” to ‘BOTH’ in the OTHERS menu. I have the latest firmware update, and my remote triggers record, zooms, etc. (from in front…) -s

on the EX-1 the LCD monitor flips the scan (upside-down) when you flip the LCD around to face the front of the camera, so it seems possible. I’ve been updated, but haven’t looked for the menu control to do that – and it’s at the office. I’ll check it Monday.

When I started using the EX-1 I was in new but welcomed territory with the small size and lighter weight. I’m older, and I’m used to the bigger cams. My Vinten has the larger plate with two screws for broadcast type camera plates. The EX-1 is kinda like a large digital SLR in that it only take a single screw from the tripod plate, and has the spring-loaded “stay” to keep it from pivoting, instead of two screws.
So I ended up going with a much lighter tripod. I use a Libec tripod and they are fine for the light weight of the EX-1. I think he only point i’d make is that there’s not sense in buying a head that’s designed for a heavier camera than you’re using. You pay more for that, and you don’t need that much resistance.

100% with you both! Competition is healthy in marketplace for recordable media – increases improvements and helps drive costs down, can’t be good for the end-user to be left with a single source for media. That would be like only one company making BetaSP tapes, or DVCAM, etc. Imagine that!
Anyway, it get old having to probe and communicate back and forth as consumers trying to get to the bottom of issues that are often caused by a lack of disclosure or a vail of hidden specs. Forums are healthy avenues to arriving at answers that are not disclosed by other means, and I think it’s great that you guys are searching for a more affordable recording media. They work great (as they should) but they’re very expensive. I think it’s safe to predict that they will become much more affordable as other companies that manufacture recordable media enter the playing field.
I for one will certainly buy media that is less expensive and reliable, and I will watch this thread to see how things go. Thanks for experimenting and researching this, and for sharing your results.

I’m on show site at DEMO08, and we’re sending firewire out of our program record Sony DSR-1500A standard definition to the team that’s capturing to FCP, who later encode to flash for streaming. So, it shouldn’t be an issue, however, that said, I’d dry run it first to test it.
XDCAM is fairly compressed MPEG2 and likely you will need to have FCP6 in order to employ the XDCAM codecs, its correct that you’ll have to capture ‘uncontrolled’ device. Make sure that your capture settings allow for the length of capture that you will need, so that it doesn’t cut out before you are done. Obviously, you need to have a scratch disc assignment that is more than large enough to contain the video files.
And that’s it, but dry-run it and make sure it works. Let us know if you have a hang up of glitch.

The EX1 can operate in a full auto mode, a semi auto mode and a manual mode. On the side of the lens there are some switches that effect the way the camera focuses. It is possible to have the lens set to ‘Macro’ which enables a focus on extremely close objects. This should be OFF when shooting distant objects. Further, if you are running in Auto Focus, and something is close by and near your camera, the sensor can be fooled to focus on it. A good practice is to go manual, and to set all switches to manual, and at that point, I like to hold the focus ring and pull it to the back position (closer to the camera body).
When you do that, the focus ring has a finite distance it will turn and the focal distances will be relative on the markers. This is especially useful when you are zoomed in, and then focus is less forgiving and adjustments are more precise then when you are zoomed out and wide. Make sure the “Full Auto’ button on the side of the camera is off.
