I took the long way to get to the point. Thanks for correcting my inconsistencies. Shortly after I posted that I thought of DivX in an AVI container – talk about a mess that Vegas doesn’t get along with well.

The reason that the error message has no useful information is because the error is coming from Windows. The program told Windows it wants a file open, and Windows couldn’t, so it returned an error instead of a file handle. Vegas has no clue why Windows couldn’t open the file, only that it didn’t.
Here is how you can see where Vegas wants to put files: Hold the SHIFT key when you click on “Preferences”. This will enable the “Internal” preferences tab.
DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING in the Internal Tab unless you really know what you are doing.
At the bottom where you can filter the information, enter “path”, as shown here. This will show you where Vegas puts things.

Well, technically, rendering has practically no effect on quality because rendered formats are all I-frames, like AVI files, and not compressed. (Since I’m nit-picking, AVI files are compressed slightly in the camera, about 5%, but Vegas does not recompress AVI).
Encoded formats, on the other hand, like h.264 or QT will suffer generational loss quickly because you are recompressing already compressed data.
But, what you probably want to do is to use embedded veg files. This way there is no recompression.

Resellerratings.com gives Ultrabooks a 10/10 rating. Their best. Even B&H which is the US top choice for video gear only gets a 9.73 out of ten.
Is it a good editing computer? I don’t know since I never edit on a laptop. I sit at a desk with three 21-inch monitors.

You are seeing all that is wrong with CMOS cameras and video compression. The GoPro video look great because the shots are planned and probably selected from hundreds of clips. Notice that everything in the GoPro video is shot at 60p. Also, the backgrounds of the GoPro videos tend to be quite monochromatic – blue sky, white snow or ocean waves. Very easy on the compressor. Your backgrounds are very complex, so the compressor spends a lot of it’s budget trying to encode the background and the whole image suffers. Also in the GoPro videos, close ups really dominate the framing. The compressor doesn’t know the background from the foreground so it treats every change from one frame to the next equally. More compression results in less quality. The ground under the bicycle get the same amount of compression as everything else – meaning, a lot, and the quality suffers. I’ve seen outdoor wedding videos ruined for compression because the trees in the background were blowing gently in the breeze. And forget about getting decent compression for hand-held shots.
