1) Rule of thumb is to shoot and edit in the highest resolution possible.
2) What version of Vegas? There’s as many opinions on this as there people uploading to YouTube.Here is an excellent tutorial by Jazzy the Dog for exporting HD material for YouTube or Vimeo.
But if time is short, here is how I made my YouTube template (with apologies to whomever I copied it from):
1080p in HD Quality for YouTube
Go to File, New.
In the window that opens, set the Width to 1920, Height to 1080. Also change the “Full-Resolution Rendering Quality” to Best. Leave everything else as it is.
Open the video/project you wish to render.
Go to File, Render As..
In the window that opens, on the “Save As Type” drop down menu select “Sony AVC” (*.mp4,*.m2ts,*avc,).
In the same window, on the “Template” drop down menu select “AVCHD 1920×1080-60i”.
Now click on the “Custom” button beside the template drop down menu.
In the window that pops up, copy the following settings exactly, and if there is something that you see that isn’t listed below, such as boxes to be ticked/unticked, leave them unticked.
VIDEO TAB:
Video Format: AVCHD
Frame Size: High definition (1920×1080)
Profile: High
Entropy Coding: Cabac
Frame Rate: 29.970 (NTSC)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1,0000
Bit Rate: 16,000,000
AUDIO TAB:
Audio Format: Dolby Digital Ac-3 Studio
Sample Rate (Hz): 48,000
Bit Rate (bps): 128,000
Audio Coding Mode: 2/0 (L,R)
SYSTEM:
Format: MPEG-2 transport stream (.m2ts)
PROJECT:
Video Rendering Quality: Best
Before exiting the window, we are going to go to the top where it says “Template:” and we are going to put in our own name for the template. Names suitable would be “YouTube HD Template”, “YouTube Temp”, “YouTube 1080p” etc.. then hit the save button (the button that is shaped like a floppy disk). Now you can click OK.Steve Mann

Kelly: It is a clip. When the clip is represented on the timeline it’s an event. Clips are physical media, events are pointers to the media clips on the timeline. You can have many events pointing to the same clip.
As an example, I recently CG’d a hundred black balloons floating up into the sky for a film that a friend is making. I started with one image of a balloon. But there’s a hundred events from that single image of a balloon on the Vegas timeline. I used event FX and keyframes to make many of the balloons look and act differently in the video, but the clip of the original balloon is unchanged.
Since I am exclusively Vegas, I am curious how this could be done in AE or other editor?
If you are familiar with Photoshop, an event is to the clip in Vegas as a smart object is to the original image in Photoshop. In neither case do you ever edit or modify the original media or image.

I bought the latest Gigabyte motherboard a few months ago, and Thunderbolt wasn’t an option. Thunderbolt is an extension of the PCIe bus, so theoretically any adapter that could be plugged into a PCIe slot in the PC can become a Thunderbolt device.
I can envision a box that connects to your PC by Thunderbolt and provides some PCIe slots.

Short answer – no.
Long answer, Firewire and USB are two entirely different protocols. Firewire is DMA (Direct Memory Access) and USB is ACK/NAK. The only way to make the protocol conversion is with a computer in the middle.The best solution is to buy an older PC or laptop that has a Firewire port, or add a Firewire port to your PC.

Not an idiot, many of us get tripped up by something simple once in a while. What splits depends on what is the “focus” (in Windows terms). If any events are selected, then the split affects those selected events under the cursor. If there are no events selected, then the split will affect all events under the cursor.

You can’t add FX to the audio media in the Project Media window, but the options for audio FX are all over the place. First you can add audio FX at the track and event level:
In the Audio Mixing Console you have many opportunities to add FX depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Note, I am not an audio expert so I tend to place my FX to the master bus because it works.

That just means that the processor can’t render each frame fast enough for full-speed preview. You could cut back to draft quality, or use a proxy file for editing.
Or buy a faster PC.

I use the R280. There’s some on eBay for $125 and up.
Apparently, there’s some patent issue that keeps other inkjet disc printers out of the USA. You can buy dedicated disc printers but they tend to be more expensive than Epsons.
