Lol! Adam, I am trying to help you!? I worked in Commercials for 12 years so I have done my fair share of re-versioning and re-editing. Your original post was vague at best and then you chose to berate me rather then volunteer any further information.

Why are you looking to change the framerate? Who is the final promo for? You client should have some sort of tech spec for final delivery so if it has been shot in say 24fps and deliver is going to be in 25fps then that seems a massive oversight to me. I can’t say I have ever heard of R3D files working natively in Color although I am not massively familiar with the app. If you only have the Final Cut suite of apps installed then perhaps you are best transcoding via Red Cine X to ProRes 4444. You need to nail down exactly what framerate you need to work in and deliver in.

Thanks. Will take a look at the link now. Whenever I have checked my MBP on the Crucial website it says the max RAM I can install is 8GB which is what I currently have. Seems I have pretty much the same model MBP as you so perhaps I can go up to 16GB. Personally I don’t have to do location work that often but I want to see what performance I can get out of this system before upgrading to a rMBP. The big (and it literally is BIG!) issue is that this 17″ MBP can’t be feasibly used in a plane seat.

Dave, sorry to branch off your original question but I am interested to know. Did you replace your OS drive with an SSD and then move your original HDD to an optibay? This is what I am planning to do as my 17″ MBP could do with a new lease of life. I have successfully tweaked premiere pro to accept my 330M as MPE device so its already running loads better.

eSATA via the express card slot on my 17″ MBP has always been very iffy. I’ll follow you advice Andy and see if I can find more stability with the sonnet driver.

Do you have any clips with matching clip names? We shoot often with 4 or 5 DSLRs and they can (when we are unlucky) by chance sometimes be notching up identical file names. If this occurs I change one batch of files from a single camera using adobe bridge. Also, whenever I sync using plural eyes I delete everything in my temp plural eyes folder. As the app creates proprietary audio files to work from these too can often end up matching file/clip names from previous or new jobs. I noticed that plural eyes would see a matching source file to a temp file and presume they were from the same job, thus ruining the sync. Long story short, delete all the temp files and see if that makes a difference. Every time I have had issues it has worked for me.

I have done this successfully many times in both directions. You just need to transcode your files to Pro Res and preserve your folder structure from your original project. its not critical but it will make relinking everything alot easier. You need to ensure your project settings all match up nicely but that is straight forward enough. Open your XML in FCP and point it at the new pro res files where appropriate. You may need to tweak performance settings to ensure good playback, i.e if you have loads of audio tracks FCP may be set to only play x amount of audio tracks before rendering. Also, any MP3s you may have used should probably be transcoded to something more FCP friendly like WAV or Aiff.

We have experimented with loads of different configs over the years. We are also pretty lucky that 99% of our weddings are already mic’d up via PA systems with all live ceremony music going through the same desk. If in doubt always mic up the Rabi, Priest, registrar, **insert official of your choice** as it is them that really do all the talking. We use Audio Technica Lavs plugged into little Yamaha C24 recorders. The mics are omni directional so should be more then enough to pick up anything the couple say. If you want to mic up the groom then thats always worth going for too as it gives you a fall back. We generally end up with 6 to 8 tracks of audio from any given ceremony. I’ll then do a mix as you don’t want just one source. Too clean an audio track can make things seem a bit stale and devoid of atmosphere. There are a couple of example below of the above configs in use.

July 17, 2012 at 10:31 am in reply to: Advice Needed! – Sound Dropping Out on Old AND New SystemWell my 16GB RAM has been replaced and the system has since run flawlessly exactly as it did before it was running on 4GB.

July 10, 2012 at 2:40 pm in reply to: Advice Needed! – Sound Dropping Out on Old AND New SystemI have run into this exact same problem the last day or two and decided to take to the net to investigate. Having read this entire thread I concur with Ryan’s last post. I recently had 12GB of RAM installed and everything has been running perfectly. 2 Sticks of RAM proved to be faulty so I RMA’d them back to Scan UK at the weekend. Since I have dropped down to 4GB of RAM while I await my replacements and the problem has reared its ugly head!
I should be running a brand new set of 16GB system RAM in the next couple of days. I’ll then be able to see if that truly is the source of the problem. Its near on impossible to cut to music at the moment 🙁
