    Don’t really have an answer that you have not probably already thought of, but I know it is lonely in these forums sometimes and I feel your pain, having just sunk $2.8K into an NX70 that I might have to return.

    Try another card – I like Kingston. Cheap, you will need more cards anyway.

    I assume you have the HXR-NX5U? (Nice cam! I wanted one but can’t afford it.)

    Hi;

    I find that for most causal shooting, 1920×1080 17 Mbps HD-FH mode at 60i is very workable, and results in files that are a lot smaller than the 24 or 28 Mbps HD-FX (either 60i or 60p). For *very* casual stuff, 1280×720 is often good enough and is a LOT smaller.

    Hope this helps, good luck!

    My NX70 arrived yesterday. Surprisingly, the zoom is OK for me – not sure if I have “fixed” unit or if I just have good motor control of my fingers. The only complaint is one has to push the rocker too far before it engages, so one has to “sneak up” on that engage point and be a bit delicate.

    But, there are other HUGE and unexpected problems with the NX70. I might have to send it back and I REALLY wanted to keep it! I’m creating a new thread to describe the problem and ask for help.

    Hi;

    Thanks for your reply. Sorry I was not more clear in my original post.

    I would always follow up with a post in the forum for all to see. The purpose of the PM would be a “tickle” to get the persons attention.

    As I stated previously, my goal is not to establish private conversations. Consider that I personally *want* to receive PMs, for the express purpose of allowing others to remind me to check a thread that perhaps I did not subscribe to, or forgot to check the little “E-Mail me when someone responds” radio button (as I almost always forget!) . I would enjoy being able to opt-in to PMs. Others might not want them, so they would not have to use PMs. I always like to err on the side of freedom of choice.

    Anyway, did not mean to touch a nerve. I’m sure you and the other powers-that-be know that CC lack of PM capability is unique in the forum universe, and want it to remain that way.

    Live Long and Prosper,

    Hi;

    Everyone, all my DVDA problems were solved by the DVDA 5.2 build 133.

    No more strange problems with .NET.

    Sony admits in the release notes that this was a bug!

    The horrible Sony “free” support took 3 weeks to respond. By then I had already solved it.

    I’m happy, but drained by the troubleshooting effort.

    Hi,

    The Sony HXR-NX3D1 looks like it is an HXR-NX70 with twin-lenses and CMOS sensors, no viewfinder, no GPS. So, it will probably have performance and low-light very similar to the NX70, which is not exceptional, but might be adequate.

    Sony lists the specs as “3 lux (Low LUX mode, 1/30 (60p or 60i) 1/25 (50p or 50i) shutter 2D only), 11 lux (Standard mode)”

    That is exactly the same as the NX70.

    Here’s a review of the NX70:

    Brad, thanks for the tip about the Libec ZC-3DV. That unit is considerably cheaper than the Manfrotto 521i (or the successor MVR901ECPL Manfrotto RC Pan Bar EX Remote Control ).

    I have ordered my NX70 – it is supposed to arrive on Nov 2. ASAP I will post test vids of the zoom rocker problem. I won’t be able to wait very long before ordering a remote, so it would be very nice if you could post feedback on the Libec soon.

    Thanks again,

    Hi Brad;

    I recently smashed my beloved Sony HDR-CX550V beyond repair. This cam is no longer available for purchase, but is pretty much identical to the MC50U, which is still available. I have received a check from my insurance company. I have had my eye on the HXR-NX70 for some time, but being an amateur on a budget I can barely afford it. This is my big chance to obtain it.

    I was almost ready to buy it from Amazon, until I read some disturbing reports about problems with: the zoom rocker, autofocus, and optical stabilization being not nearly as good as the CX550V (i.e., the MC50U)

    A Lanc controller might be a viable option until the rumored firmware fix comes out next year. But, here is my stupid question – where does the controller attach? I have heard of “lanc” before, some hand-holding would be greatly appreciated.

    Perhaps I could Velcro one to the cam near the rocker … sorry if this seems silly.

    Would also greatly appreciate your analysis of the reported poorer stabilization than the CX550V and the autofocus problems.

    I really want to buy this cam … but if I blow $3K on something that will not work for me, I will be devastated.

    I have a bit of urgency in that I need to participate in a video shoot of the Youth Orchestra in which my daughter plays Cello – the shoot is at the end of October.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi Mike;

    Thanks for the reply. I know my post was lengthy so you probably missed the tests I did that already elmininated dics as the possible cause of the problem.

    I have solved the problem. It was software.

    I’m happy but disgusted.

    The details are in this thread : DVD Architect Pro 5.2 error when preparing Blu-ray

    It is interesting that the problem had nothing to do with burn speed , or disc brand … it was 100% a software conflict with a stupid Windows update and DVDA 5.2 .

    Very Frightening and Disturbing!
