Hmm.. I just found a couple of posts around here that suggest it can’t be done with the tools supplied in Vegas.
Shame on Sony, I suppose, for omitting such a basic function. Maybe I just use a resonant filter instead, duh 😎

Hi László,
I’ll give that a try. When I rendered again the other day, I noticed quite a bit of difference between Vegas 9 and 12. We usually edit on 12, but sometimes we need to edit in 9, because 12 chokes on the files by a certain client.
I think I need to add extra large pixels because when the image is scaled to a smaller output frame size, some of the blurring effect disappears. It doesn’t happen as much ith v12.
Thanks,

I wasn’t aware of this – I’ll see if I can dig it out for the next project. This is not the first map/route that I needed to draw and I’m sure it won’t be the last one.

Hi Craig,
that’s a good idea, doing it in a separate project. I’ll think of that the next time. The current project is already done.

Hi László,
Your comment about setting the border of the transition to 0 actually made me realize why it didn’t work to begin with. It’s because the pictures are portrait 4:3 images that don’t fill the screen. I would actually need a negative value in the border box, which of course does not exist.
The masking procedure you described does not seem to work any better for me than the hole-in-the-middle approach. So I used that and animated the transition with a few keyframes in the pan/crop box. This made for a very convincing swipe. So… project closed ?
Thanks a bunch,

Hi László,
actually, the ‘hole-in-the-middle’ idea worked. The illusion is correct, but the push transition still doesn’t cut it, because the images are not side by side. They are still traveling across the screen (even though they’re invisible outside my transparent hole), and so there is still a gap between the images when they should really be adjacent to one another.
I can probably fix that now with the pan/crop box, but let’s hear your other idea, too ,-)

That’s an interesting idea – I’ll give that a try.

Thanks for your insights, John. My own system is a Mac also (and I convert everything to Prores there).
Here at work I can only use what I am given. The Panasonic footage is a one time glitch though, so yes, just putting it in the timeline and rendering it is the best option. I should have thought of that, alas… I did not.
That will do it and then I’m back to the EX1 anyway.
Thanks much,

Hi John,
I’m using a Quadcore Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31220 @ 3.10GHz, 3101 MHz with 8G of RAM.
The AVCHD files come from a Panasonic ‘prosumer’ camcorder, HDC-SD300.
I’ve never converted anything around here, because we always shoot on a Sony EX1R which of course works just like that. Is this something that can be done within Vegas? I’m pretty much stuck here at work with what we’ve got and do not have access to add apps to the system.
Thanks,
