You’re absolutely right, and I just realized my folly. I was previewing via firewire to my deck, then via s video to a JVC studio monitor. My problem was just ignorance of the capabilities of S Video. So, now that I am previewing with my Blackmagic card, I see that I have no red bleed at all. Thanks for your help and advice…I learned a thing or two today!

I should have been more clear with my question; I didn’t mean technically how do I export my timeline to tape, but rather how can I ensure that my reds don’t bleed when exporting to tape via firewire. If my preview looks bad via firewire, then won’t my export look the same?

Aha! You are absolutely right…I was previewing it via firewire. The actual images look great. One more question, if you don’t mind. How can I export my final render to tape via firewire from my NLE once I incorporate my graphics into a final DV timeline? Will my tape reflect the same strange bleeding?

Thanks for the responses. I (and I’m ebarrassed) had i-link turned on on my deck. At worst, maybe this will help somebody else who’s green with this deck like I am. Sorry everybody.

no, nothing freezes up. The media end point is just ignored. I can esc normally and capture is aborted.
I’m using a brand new 4 x 2.5 GHz G-5 with 4.5 GB RAM and FCP 5.0.4.
I modified the capture settings to capture NDF time code, otherwise I am capturing just like FCP was installed.

“Of course there’s an interlacing issue on your computer monitor. It’s a progressive scan monitor and you’re playing interlaced video on it. You have to view interlaced video on an NTSC monitor. Same with the DVD material.”

10-4. I am using an NTSC monitor. I was just trying to illustrate that not only does it look strange on my computer monitor, but it looks worse on an NTSC monitor. Sorry for the confusion.

I have footage from a 2 camera shoot. the cameras were beta SP.
They were captured to Final Cut as Uncompressed 8-bit.
The sequence settings match the clips.
I exported the quicktime movie with the sequence settings.
the quicktime file looks good on the computer monitor (apple studio monitor), but when burned to DVD there is a weird interlacing issue on a TV monitor…When someone moves across the frame, there are obvious (interlace-looking) lines.
There was an intro created by someone else (animation codec) which looks clean.
Any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated.
