I think a number of us are probably hoping that at least the FCP X/Motion update isn’t quite such a damp squib …

  • I really do urge you to check out Charlie Austin’s entertaining and extremely enlightening blog:

    https://fcpxpert.net/

You will find answers to many of your questions and gain seriously valuable insights into how a power user of FCP X makes it work – I defy you not to be impressed after seeing some of things that Charlie does with it.

  • Yes, indeed.

My point of course is that if you can set up Premiere to have the exact same layout as FCP X offers you, it’s hard to understand the argument that it’s somehow inferior in terms of layout options.

Or maybe nobody’s actually said that …

  • Of course, if you wanted, you could build a layout that looks exactly the same as the FCP X layout.

    How cool is that?!

    😉

  • Why didn’t the 747 view come preloaded with my version?

    😉

It really pays to spend time finding the layouts that work for you and saving them as workspaces.

Where someone like you, Walter, favours a NASA-complex wall of controls, I like the exact opposite – everything stripped right down to the few options that I need for the task in hand.

Custom workspaces mean that you can easily swap to something completely different for a different task.

In other words, Adobe offers you whatever you want and the flexibility to swap to anything else at any time – it’s as simple or as complex as you want it to be.

I was momentarily excited when I thought Phil Schiller was about to announce that they’d developed a solution to World Peace (or something of that kind):

“The reason to move on, it really comes down to one word: courage,” he said. “The courage to move on to do something that betters all of us.”

    Sadly it wasn’t to be.

[Bill Davis] ” suspect when Apple unveils whatever they’ve been working on in the video production space, it likely won’t be months more of wait for editors to be able to put whatever it is to use, but that’s pure guesswork in my part.”

A different strategy for sure and some of us are happy with it and some of us are less keen.

For my money, I think I prefer to get an advance tease of a product that’s on its way – I’m certainly pretty excited about Team Projects, whatever it actually turns out to be.

Whereas I have nothing to get specifically excited about from Apple just yet … although of course it could be amazing when it arrives.

From a marketing point of view, you’d have to think that Adobe’s more conventional approach is the better strategy. But of course Apple doesn’t do conventional marketing and never will.

Personally I’m pretty darn excited about Team Projects.

Wireless earbuds and a dust-resistant something or other, less so.

  • [Robin S. Kurz] “So I think it’s pretty delusional to think they’ll suddenly “come to” and go back to floaters etc. anytime soon, if anyone actually believes that or thinks it’s somehow a good idea or could pose an actual improvement. Do you?”

I’m with you on floating windows and agree that the HUD in Motion is more trouble than it’s worth.

However, just to be annoying I’m going to point out that there are indeed floating windows in FCP X, namely Record Voice-Over and Background Tasks.

    😉

  • [Robin S. Kurz] “Aside from them not actually being rigid but already pretty flexible”

I’ve read what you’ve said about this here and take on board some of your arguments, but let me give you an example where Apple’s “rigidity” as I’m calling it is distinctly sub-optimal and that’s the Inspector.

The height of the Inspector is at all times constrained by the height of the Timeline and of course there is a fixed minimum height for the Timeline as well.

This means that you can never use the full height of the screen for the Inspector, and for Effects, Generators and Transitions with anything more than the bare minimum of controls this is a clear limitation.

For comparison, we can look at what BMD did with Resolve. Exact same layout, but you can toggle the Inspector to full height as needed.

Apple could have done the same, but they didn’t.

So that’s just one example, but it does suggest that Apple don’t always design things in the best possible way.
