I meant to add that you’re best off editing the music into the primary storyline (rather than connecting it to it) so that it makes the spine for everything else.

No, there is no other behaviour available. You are better off cutting a music promo by connecting your shots (Q) to the primary storyline so they sit above it rather than putting them on the primary storyline where any changes you make will ripple the edit – the last thing you want to happen 😉

Unfortunately this is not what I need, although you are right that this actually “gangs” the two clips together. My requirement is to be able to gang a different source to the clip on the timeline in order to be able to eye-match material from a different source.

Actually it’s pretty easy to do with the Ken Burns effect inside FCPX – you can’t finesse the keyframes but it would be a very quick way of doing it fairly well.

Absolutely.

I have to say that in general editing as well I use Replace far more than I use Overwrite because it eliminates so many keystrokes and enables much greater precision.

But as a basic tool of the assistant editor’s craft it’s totally essential.
