[Craig Seeman] “Apple does things different. It’s often hard to figure out since their business model seems very different, at least superficially, than so many other businesses in the similar technology fields.”
But surely even the most successful businesses do things wrong from time to time – for the simple reason that it’s incredibly hard to do things right all the time.
It’s clear that FCPX is a gamble for Apple – but it might just as well be a badly calculated gamble as an incredibly insightful one.

[Craig Seeman] “Apple has been known to try to steer people down a path.”
In terms of their larger, consumer-facing business, this is undeniable.
But how true is it to say that Apple have ever steered the pro-editing (or the pro-audio or the pro-anything) community down a path that wasn’t already quite well trodden by others? If that is their plan now, which it clearly appears to be, it surely represents a departure in terms of the pro-apps, doesn’t it? But it’s not as if they have a track record of doing this within this particular market sector.

[Matt Callac] ” I want to know how things are suppose to function”
I think a lot of people are getting into a mindset that there’s a “right way” to do things in FCPX and are getting quite prescirptive over what they see as the “wrong way” of doing things.
I’ve trained a lot of editors over the years on a variety of NLEs and seen them at work and pretty much none of them has ever worked optimally, in fact most of them worked completely sub-optimally most of the time. The reason is that everyone likes doing things “their own way” even if it makes no sense to do so and even when it’s pointed out to them that it makes no sense.
I don’t think we should be anxious about trying to find the right way of doing everything in FCPX, just the way (or preferably ways) that work best for us individually.
I do worry that at present there appear to be limited options in terms of alternative ways of doing things in FCPX. The ideal situation is when there are a whole variety of different ways of doing things and you can pick the ways that most appeal to your fingers and your brain – even if they make no sense to anybody else 😉

July 6, 2011 at 3:13 pm in reply to: Slipping footage in Primary Storyline with connect video issue[Jeremy Garchow] “Can’t you link the top clip to the music?”
Only if you put the music in the primary storyline – which incidentally is definitely the correct way to go when cutting music promos. Mostly though you wouldn’t want this …

July 6, 2011 at 3:04 pm in reply to: Slipping footage in Primary Storyline with connect video issueHere’s a pretty simple way of achieving this:
Select your primary storyline clip and use Opt/Cmd/Up Arrow to move it out of the primary storyline.
The connected clip will stay connected to the primary storyline and not the clip you have just moved.
You can now move the moved clip as freely as you want and the previously connected clip won’t move as it’s still connected to the primary storyline.
When you’re done you can use Ot/Cmd/Down arrow to move the edited clip back down to the primary storyline and the overlaid clip will reconnect to it.
Having said, all that I don’t think Apple have really thought all this through quite the way it needs to be done.

[David A Fenton] “a realistic UFO to be keyed into some footage being edited in FCPX”
I just love that “realistic UFO” cos we all remember the last time we saw one of those in the real world 😉
Pretty much any 3D software will get you started and they will all enable you to render out files with embedded alpha that you can use inside FCPX (although you’ll always get a better result compositing in a specialised compositing app than in an NLE). LightWave or the entry level Cinema 4D are probably your best bet for this kind of thing.

[Kevin P McAuliffe] ” Just cause a program is free, doesn’t mean you should use it.”
Just because it’s free, doesn’t mean it’s not worth taking a look at 😉
I won’t be using Blender any time soon, but last time I looked I was very impressed with where it had got to and there are some interesting design concepts in there too.
And sometimes you don’t get what you pay for …
(Though I’d definitely opt for Cinema 4D over all the rest if I wasn’t especially interested in getting too deeply into 3D and just wanted to do the basic stuff.)

[Kevin P McAuliffe] ” For me, there is no easier 3D application out there than Cinema 4D.”
Agreed, Cinema 4D is definitely the most user-friendly option out there by a long way – but it’s not exactly a cheap option (if you want a fully featured version) compared to some of the other offerings like Modo, LightWave and Blender which is the cheapest of all, seeing as it’s free,

[1] Why can’t Secondary Storylines be moved in the Timeline? I find that you have de-storyline the clip in order to move it.”You can drag a secondary storyline to wherever you want it in the primary storyline and it will perform an insert edit. It will of course cease to be a storyline in itds own right at this point but then you wouldn’t expect otherwise. You should use compound clips if you want a grouping to stay together in the primary storyline.
