Hmmmmm, yes – the problem is that you can very easily assign onscreen controls for filters (here he’s just published the built-in onscreen controls for ramping the gradient) but it’s much trickier to make them work for things like scaling and position.
In fact, you’d be amazed at how complex the FCPX Mask effect is in order to give you control just over the position of the four corners of the mask … but I’ll get there one way or another 😉

Try this version which I have recreated as 1080 29.97. I have a bad feeling the frame rate might still mess up as I reckon there’s an issue with Drop Zones as I mentioned.

How did you get the video into the Drop Zones? I think there is an issue with frame rate if you pick the clips off the timeline as I know I suggested following a recommendation from Alex Gollner. It seems to me that if you get your clips from the Browser it doesn’t affect the frame rate, but that has obvious limitations in that your source clip will only play from the head and will ignore your in/out points.
To be honest I would recommend using the new Frame Effect (above) to get round this problem. Since you are not reliant on Drop Zones the whole thing works far better I think.
I did try changing the frame rate of the Motion project and there were still major issues. I’ll give it a go now for you anyway with a Motion project set to 29.97 and see if it works for you.

Glad you like it – I think you’ll find it much easier to use than what I gave you before.
You can turn to border down to zero and it will disappear but I can also add a checkbox.
I have checked again here and I can’t see the bleed-through you are talking about in either Motion or FCPX. Are you sure you’re not just reducing the scale of the source image a bit too much, which is what would cause this?
I’ll certainly see what I can do with onscreen controls – that’s a good idea and would make it even quicker to use.

Thanks, Nick. That’s exactly why I wanted to persevere with this, as I think it’s now a massive labour-saver over any other way of doing this kind of work.
Motion templates are simply amazingly powerful now and the number of great ideas people have already come up with in such a short time is a really good sign.

Great review of DS, Declan. I’d agree with all of that, especially the point about what AVID have done to the product, or rather not done.
The only thing I would say is that it’s hardly a direct alternative to FCP for anyone looking to move to another editing tool. The truth is it’s far, far more powerful than FCP ever was or could have been, and with that comes the fact that for a lot of people it would be a massive steep learning curve to get up to speed with DS. Like Smoke, it’s very much a product designed for the power-user – rather than a basic tool for cutting pictures.

If you want to edit the way you’re describing here, you’d have to use Overwrite rather than Insert edit – it’s Insert edit that’s pushing your subsequent clips down the timeline (Apple’s idea of making things easier for beginning editors!).
Seriously – edit the music into the primary storyline and you won’t look back, I promise!
And use Connect edit, rather than Insert or Overwrite!
