[Brad Davis] “I doubt we will see OMF directly in FCPX ever again. In the article previously posted by the 7 Editors take a look at FCPX…OMF licensing is owned by AVID.”
You may well be right – but if the makers of the forthcoming XtoPro can afford the licence how is it that Apple cannot?
Possibly a bit cash-strapped, would be my guess …

[Craig Seeman] “Some of the under the hood stuff, even if still a work in progress (Photoshop layers) show attention to improving core functions.”
I’m afraid that “Photoshop Layers” was just another bit of flash, as I’m calling it – see this thread for more details:
https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/344/7866
In its current form it has pretty limited value, though it clearly has bragging appeal at a certain (not terribly advanced) level.
I don’t want to see more of this kind of stuff – I want to see features that work properly/have been thought through before they are bolted onto Frankenstein’s neck.

[Bill Davis] “I suspect App store purchases are often “impulse” buys. And if you’re searching for – say – a plug-in – you’re likely doing so because you have a problem you need to solve immediately.”
I think the issue here is that there is a huge discrepancy between the kind of Angry Birds impulse app purchase that you are describing and the hopefully considered kind of purchasing decision when acquiring a commercially critical product like xto7, to pick and example out of thin air.
When buying this I wasn’t casually browsing the App Store wondering “what shall I spend my pennies on today?” but rather I was going there because there was a product recommended by my peers that I was counting on to solve an urgent business need.
Surely there’s an important difference here.
This is why I get a little riled when people suggest that buying some novelty light leaks plug-in is somehow on a par with buying a mission-critical app like xto7. I don’t think the two things have anything in common despite the shared distribution model. If the light leaks plug-in has a bug, I don’t really care and I move on. If the FCPXML translator (or whatever) has issues then it may have a critical impact on my ability to deliver to my clients and hence a potentially damaging impact on my business.

I think what I was saying is that the App Store model probably ultimately suits the third party developers commercially but it potentially slows down the process of the updates actually getting to us. So that we as end users would have been better off if they hadn’t published via the App Store= but sold the main product and delivered its updates to us directly through their own site.
All rather hypothetical, sorry 😉

[Jeremy Garchow] “And, once complete, I’d imagine updates (revision updates that is) take a bit longer to actually hit the download waves as they have to be vetted by Apple.”
Interesting point – I hadn’t factored that in. By that token, we’d be better off getting these kind of products direct from IA and their like rather than from the App Store.

[Craig Seeman] “Given what they did with the Angle Viewer, I don’t think it would be too far fetched to see a “Gang” feature since that’s needed and I can’t see another way around that.”
I will be really interesting to see how soon they address this. It’s an absolutely critical function for many of my workflows that simply cannot be done without.
I’m not surprised they got around to multicam as soon as they did because it’s an on-the-surface-sexy, sell-more-units-to-unsuspecting-punters type of gimmick that they would see the advantage of devoting some time to, even if not the time necessary to actually make it work as it should in the more demanding real-world situations that we actually encounter.
Ganging, however, is deeply unsexy and probably only required by a tiny handful of editors. How quickly they get around to it will tell us a lot about their real priorities. I’d expect a lot more superficial flashy nonsense to appear before that.

Great list, Oliver – absolutely agree about all of this.
For anyone thinking re: no.6 that xto7 is a complete answer to the whole OMF question, please note the issues I have had with my first attempts at using it for audio:
https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/344/7958
OMF is absolutely critical and it has to work impeccably every time under all circumstances, something that FCP legacy managed far better than AVID ironically. Third party solutions which may or may not work under all circumstances are worse than useless in a time-sensitive professional environment.
So my only quibble with your list would be moving OMF right up to the number one slot. And while we’re at it, let’s have OMF import as well which is the one thing that I still really like about Media Composer.

[Michael Gissing] “It just occurred to me that rather than wait for this software, perhaps Xto7 could be used to move the audio into FCP7 which then makes an OMF. If anyone has this software and can test if that works I would appreciate it. All that is needed is audio plus handles.”
Hi Michael
Acting on this supposition I tried this route to get my audio out of FCPX. I only got as far as FCP 7 before it all went pear-shaped.
See here for a list of major (and currently fatal) hazards that I encountered:
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/344/7938
Not a route I would recommend at this point in time, though IA are looking into these issues for me.

[Bill Davis] “It does kinda reinforce the idea that in the new App Store era of constant update, revision and enhancement – pushed instantly to the market – “real world shake out” is somewhat replacing the old system of months of formalized beta testing prior to boxed product release.”
Agreed – but is it entirely for the good of the consumer, as I think perhaps you might be suggesting?

One more issue that I should mention:
Detached audio seems not to get translated.
I have just confirmed this with a project with just one video/audio clip with the audio detached. Just as in the problem project referred to above, the video came through fine, but not the detached audio.
Has anybody else experienced this? It seems like an issue that would have occurred quite commonly since the initial release of Xto7 so I’m thinking there’s perhaps something odd about the way it’s working with 10.0.3 perhaps.
