[Gabe Strong] ” Adobe, in my opinion, caters to the bigger houses, agencies, and teams. People who can make amazing stuff with AE.”

I don’t know, Gabe. As a one man band myself, I don’t feel that way at all. The Adobe tools seem to be really accessible. I can get a lot done with minimal effort, yet they’re scalable enough that I can go as far as my abilities will take me, and that’s kind of the cool thing about AE IMO. I have have friends and coworkers who only use the software for simple things, but I also have friends and peers who use it for high end work. If Adobe was mostly interested in their upmarket users (like AutoDesk is), you certainly wouldn’t be seeing guys like Kevin Monahan hanging out at The Cow.

[Gabe Strong] ” Premiere is fine but really it’s just another NLE. Nothing revolutionary or special.”

What about the Warp Stabilizer or the Mercury Playback Engine, are those not unique or revolutionary?

  • [Andy Field] “Macs seems to be ready to edit out of the box…PC’s often more finicky making sure you have the right sound and audio cards/compatibility.”

I think that’s mostly true for general purpose or low end PCs. If you buy from a vendor that builds machines specifically for content creation, your chances of running into compatibility issues are much lower. To Walter’s point, HP builds workstations, all-in-ones and laptops for content creation. Boxx, Puget Sound Systems and Dell also have similar offerings.

  • [Ryan Holmes] “Persistent problems – internal electrical grounding issues when running off of an external battery…”

Thanks Ryan, those are serious issues. I’ve had great experiences with the Pocket Cinema Camera and the 2.5k Cinema Camera, so I was on the fence about the Production Camera 4k, so much so that BMD announced the Ursa Mini at just about the time I made up my mind to try it. Now, I think I’ll wait to see how the 4.6k Ursa Mini shakes out.

[Ryan Holmes] “As a corollary it doesn’t do well with quick run ‘n gun style shooting, which can be a part of my corporate work life.”

Same here. I use the more conventional AF100 in my corporate day job, but I use the BMD cameras for personal projects. The downside is that I seem to be losing my tolerance for 8bit, 4:2:0 images. So much so that I frequently find myself wondering why Panasonic, Sony, Canon, et al can’t seem to deliver 10bit, 4:2:2 compressed or 12bit raw images for less than the cost of an economy car.

  • [Ryan Holmes] “Every time we shot the camera my crew would say, “Well….it only cost $3K” in order to justify whatever inadequacy it was presenting us.”

    Hey Ryan,

Just out of curiosity, what kind of issues were you running into with the BMPC 4k?

[David Mathis] “Honestly, it appears that 4K resolution is just another fad.”

Probably not for acquisition or post… 🙂

[David Mathis] ” was waiting for that type of comment. 🙂

Walked right into that one. Guess technology is like a bar. You say to yourself, “Just one more”. You promise to resolve but all it takes is one sip too many. Then you are hooked you become an addict. You are glued to your tablet, your phone, all around you disappears. Then after hours of surfing, loosing your mind you look at the clock and wonder how long your friendly computer has taken control over you.”

Doesn’t that all boil down to how you’re choosing to spend you’re time though? 🙂 Mind you, I’m as guilty as anyone of being more interested in the NLE food fights on The Cow, than being “productive” during long renders… I just don’t think it’s a technology issue. 🙂

[David Mathis] “Technology is not always a good thing, in fact it feels the exact opposite.”

He said to the Internet. 🙂

[James Culbertson] “[Shawn Miller] “[James Culbertson] “Premiere and FCP7 feel more engineer-driven now than they used to in comparison; I think students prove this point too.”

How so? Premiere Pro seems to have incorporated more user feedback into it’s design and functionality than ever before… certainly more so than in the pre CS days.”

More than feel or using of the interface than the features themselves.”

So, what in PPro CC 2014 feels like engineer driven design vs user driven design?

[Bret Williams] “The G4, and then G5 (fastest computer at the time for a moment and was being installed in hordes as a supercomputer, etc) weren’t enough?”

That was marketing. The G4 and G5 were slower than the fastest PC of the time.
