[Simon Ubsdell] “[Shawn Miller] “I’m sorry, I should have been more clear – Does Fusion Connect only output video clips for Fusion, or can it also render out single image files like .DPX or .TIFF files”

    Ah, OK. Got you.

Yes, Fusion and Fusion Connect work with image sequences very well.

In fact, I prefer to use image sequences (my preference is for OpenEXR) wherever possible since you can re-render just a section of a complicated composition rather than the whole thing.”

Good to know, thanks Simon! I have to wait until September to get Fusion Studio, but I’m really looking forward to diving into the Resolve/Fusion workflow.

[Simon Ubsdell] “[Shawn Miller] “Do you (or anyone) know if Fusion Connect also works with graphics?”

What do you mean by that?

The thing about Fusion Connect is that you are rendering media rather than doing any kind of live “dynamic” linking, although Andrew Devis showed a cunning if cumbersome way of doing a kind of live linking.

That means that any type of project is going to work just as well …”

I’m sorry, I should have been more clear – Does Fusion Connect only output video clips for Fusion, or can it also render out single image files like .DPX or .TIFF files? I do this a lot, send stills out from the PPro timeline to AE for effects, animation or whatnot.

This is really cool! Do you (or anyone) know if Fusion Connect also works with graphics?

Thanks for sharing Simon, this review certainly turns up the excitement level for me personally. While I like what I’ve seen from tutorials on the 3D camera tracker, Fusion’s tool probably won’t be replacing Syntheyes for me anytime soon. However, I do find this quite intriguing:

“One thing that Fusion has that Nuke does not: an interactive connection with the DaVinci Resolve timeline. That effectively turns Fusion into a Smoke, and that with some of the best color grading tools in the industry.”

I’ve been using Resolve to debayer and grade raw footage for a few years now, but lately, I’ve been finding myself using it for review and basic editing tasks as well. Performance has gotten so much better in fact, that I don’t even think about cutting 3:1 and 4:1 compressed 4k cDNG sequences anymore, it just works. Now, I’m anxious to see if I can work in a similar way as I’m used to working in Adobe applications; aquire>edit>track>animate>paint>composite>grade>output. I’m not looking to displace Adobe tools necessarily… but it will be VERY interesting for me to see if I can get through a complete project without touching an Adobe application. I’m going to try. ☺

[Simon Ubsdell] “Nobody, but nobody, is changing the game at anything even remotely approaching that pace that BMD have now achieved.”

    Agreed!

[Simon Ubsdell] “The planar and camera tracking functionality, including planar transforms of roto, are going to make a massive difference and on their own make the new price for Studio ludicrously good value.”

This is nearly an understatement! The Mocha plugin alone is more expensive than Fusion Studio, add a camera tracker and you’re looking at (minimum) another $300 US. I’m really looking forward to trying these features myself. ☺

[Simon Ubsdell] “[Shawn Miller] “I want BMD to take my money now!”

It’s pretty insane, if true. And as you say, if they can get the kind of “automagical” results you get from the Resolve tracker, then it’s going to be a game changer.

But let’s not underestimate how major the Ultimatte thing is likely to be – I think that has the potential to be massive as well.”

Absolutely! I just completed an interview in which I used the tracker pretty extensively, so it’s top of mind. I’m equally excited about Ultimatte though, it would just be foolish to not have these tools in the toolset.

[Simon Ubsdell] “Not just that, but planar AND camera tracking, if that leak is to be believed.”

Okay… now THAT should be the headline. If the camera tracker is built on the same technology as the point cloud tracker in Resolve 14, I want BMD to take my money now!

  • [Herb Sevush] “[Mark Suszko] “VR is a big shot in the arm for old roller-coaster rides, which now suddenly can become virtual space dogfights, Indiana Jones mine car chases, a Fantastic Voyage thru the circularity system… all on the same day, different experience each ride.”

If you’ve ever been to the “Body Wars” pavilion at Epcott center you would understand that with VR glasses you not only don’t need a real location, you don’t even need a true roller-coaster to create the experiences you are talking about.”

It’s true – the sense of height and movement is so convincing that I had a hard time keeping my balance the first time I experienced VR gaming. VR is here to stay IMO – I don’t think anyone here will need to ditch their non-VR NLEs anytime soon, but having an understanding of motion graphics and 3D production might open some interesting opportunities in the future.
