Just out of curiosity, what format(s)are you working in? I work Mostly with Adobe’s CS4 Creative Suite and Vegas and I have very few problems.I think it’s probably because 90% of my work is in P2 and TIFF sequences (which Adobe supports natively), so I rarely use intermediate CODECS. For the remaining 10% of footage where I need a DI, I use Black Magic’s 8 bit 4:2:2 CODEC and it works just fine (for me). I’m not sure how that stacks up against FCP and ProRes though.

    Thanks,

    Hi Dennis,

Sorry for the delayed response, it’s been a busy week.

“How’s that “green” beam of light working for you?”

I haven’t noticed a shift in color so far… does this model have issues with color?

    “I would guess you have a 4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ fixture (maybe even a 6″ x 9″).”

    I have a 6×16 lense tube.

“what is the beam spread diameter on the surface at the distance you’re lighting?”

    About six feet.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

April 3, 2009 at 11:51 pm in reply to: Gateway? Dell? HP? 3 GB DDR3 vs 8 GB DDR2…HELP!

I’ve used Dell workstations at different companies for years. They’re not bad machines at all. But for bang for the buck, I still really like Bold Data Systems’ PCs (https://www.boldata.com). In my experience, they beat anything in their price range hands down. No offense to other systems intergrators, but Bold Data is small enough that they can give great customer service, but large enough that they can build good systems at a low cost. Additionally, they list what components actually go into their machines, so you don’t have to worry about them sticking low cost, generic parts with bad drivers into your computer.

    Anyway, that’s my two cents.

    Good luck,

I’ve been sucessfully running PPCS4 on 64bit XP from day one. It seems to be more stable (for me) on 64bit XP than 32bit XP. I’m hoping to avoid Vista altogether and possibly upgrade to Windows 7 after SP2.

Here’s a link to a PDF from Adobe that summarizes the advantages of using a 64bit OS with PP… note that XP64 is supported.

    Hey Noah,

Hopefully I’m not being too ‘nitpickey’ here, but I don’t want anyone to get confused. XML isn’t a file container, it’s a markup language that descibes data and how it should be structured in a document… at least that’s how I understand it. 🙂

    Thanks,

I agree with Jason, move that decimal point a space or two to the right. 🙂

I think companies will continue to pay for good work… but to be honest, the days of the 70k, 3 minute customer showcase video are probably over… come to think of it, the 10k CEO talking head video is probably out too… bill accordingly.

    December 4, 2008 at 11:51 pm in reply to: HVX200 vs. PD150

That’s a good point, I think it’s a good idea to rent or borrow any camera before buying it. Especially with tapeless workflows, you never know how your system will work with a particular CODEC or format until you use it… it seems better to find that out before you spend a lot of money. 🙂

    December 4, 2008 at 6:46 pm in reply to: HVX200 vs. PD150

The HV30 makes very nice looking images… but it’s not exactly a manual camera and it’s audio capabilites probably aren’t what you would want in a producton camera… not a production where audio is important. 🙂

    Thanks,

November 24, 2008 at 6:16 pm in reply to: Which is better for particles?

I can’t think of anything that AE’s particle systems can’t do that Particular can… that said, Particular (IMO) is more intuitive and renders faster than Particle World or Particle Playground… at least on my machines. I use Particular for 99% percent of my particle needs… but that’s mostly because it seems to render so much more quickly than anything else. I also like Particle Illusions, but it falls short if you need to work in “3D” space.

    Thanks,

    Shawn
