Actually, it turns out the file was corrupt anyway.

If I reduce a video from 1280 to 720, it’s definitely smaller. Not sure I understood your comment on that.

I’ll adjust my bit rates and audio settings as you indicate.

    Thanks for the help Vince.

  • Quick update: It wasn’t until I opened the original media files in Quicktime to compare them (hoping to see something I wasn’t seeing in PrP), and noticed that the camera files were compressed to h.264. Sure enough, in the finder I could see the files were substantially smaller that media from the other cameras at similar length. I imagine this has something to do with it.

I ran one of the compressed media files through Compressor and converted it to pro-res (I’m sure that must be like trying to enlarge a poor image in Photoshop), and it seems to stutter less in Premiere’s source monitor on playback and scrubbing. Not flawless, but better.

Anyone else having this problem might take a look at the media for compression.

Thanks Craig, and Brad. It was sort of what I was expecting, but was concerned maybe I was missing something obvious technically. I think the cost to get the best tools is justifiable, so not a big issue there.

Thanks – think I’ll try having both Flip and Episode on hand. Seems like politics shouldn’t keep pros from simple tasks, but I think that’s likely a different topic.

    Thanks for the advice,
    Shawn

Any radical change is going to have bumps. I used a copy of InDesign way back when it was still beta …I pounded my desk and swore profusely for a solid year, but it eventually came around as the lead application. This is the same. They’ll get it sorted out.
