August 23, 2018 at 8:33 pm in reply to: Depressing. Footage in Premiere/VLC looks VERY different in Quicktime/Vimeo/Youtube[Antoine Le Guen] “I am currently switching to FCPX for the small stuff & Resolve (better color/audio) for the big ones because of this very reason.”
If you use Resolve for grading, you’ll need Blackmagic IO out to a good HDTV to see a proper image. The built in viewer isn’t accurate at all…far from it. One reason BMD makes Resolve for free, is to sell their BMD hardware…
[Antoine Le Guen] “I lost days trying to figure out why the short film I just spent days grading looked weird everywhere but on Firefox & VLC and figured out that ALL my work from last year looks dull pretty much on every browser/player because of this unacceptable issue for a so-called “professional” NLE… “
This will be the case with FCPX too…what you see in it won’t be what you see in QT vs VLC vs Firefox vs Chrome vs Safari….

August 23, 2018 at 5:43 pm in reply to: Simple? Premiere timeline into Avid with linked media?[Larry Herbst] “export an AAF in Premiere, open it in Avid. Except no matter what settings I use for the “Import EDL” dialogue box,”
Export an AAF…and then import it as EDL? Those are different things. IMPORT AAF…and that may or may not work.
[Larry Herbst] “I’ve tried exporting XML’s from Premiere and importing them into Avid. Similar results.”
Avid doesn’t do XML.
[Larry Herbst] ”
There’s got to be a way that works…isn’t there?”Export XML. Bring that into Resolve. Then “Deliver” out an Avid AAF. You might need to render the media out to Avid media in order to link properly.
[Larry Herbst] “But I find myself ready to tell the director sorry, I can’t give you the timeline, but if you want me to rebuild it by hand, give me a day and I’ll go shot by shot and eyeball it.”
Why are you doing this? Why not continue working in Premiere? Converting sequences from one NLE to another isn’t a simple process. It’s easier between FCX and PPro, as they both do XML, but even then, you need a third party app designed JUST for that process. There is no app for Premiere to Avid or other way. You’ll have to use workarounds and render out new media.

August 20, 2018 at 11:33 pm in reply to: FCP7 conversion to AvidMC using Automatic Duck FCP Export[Kathryn Barnier] “Any one have any luck converting a FCP7 sequence to Avid MC2018 using Automatic Duck…”
Yes, done it lots.
[Kathryn Barnier] “and then successfully relinking the media. “
No. You need to use the option in the Duck to convert the footage to Avid media. And then you put the transcodes into the Avid file structure. But doing it that was is pretty solid.
[Kathryn Barnier] ” We tried all the methods described for AvidMC 5 & 6, tutorials on the web, but these methods seem to require the use of the menu items AMA Volumes & AMA Files import, which seem to have been eliminated from the Media Composer menu.”
Even when there were AMA options, it was spotty, at best. Even the author of the Duck says best to just convert, because relinking was problematic, they never solidly got it to work.
[Kathryn Barnier] “Any alternative methods for migrating from FCP7 to Avid MC2018?”
Resolve. XML out of FCP, import that and media into Resolve, render out as Avid media, and use the AVID AAF DELIVERY option.
But again, best to transcode the media. Relinking to existing media doesn’t really work.

[Mike Poliskey] “Is it possible to play it from USB disk connected?”
As long as the TV supports it. Some do, some don’t. If they don’t, then you’ll have to use a computer as the playback, connected to the TV.
[Mike Poliskey] “If yes, is h264 the best codec for this scenario? “
Yup.
[Mike Poliskey] “Or can I get some better quality with another settings?”
You can get better quality, but will it play back? TVs that can play back attached media will do H.264…but won’t do things like ProRes (which is better quality).

This is a screen shot of your SOURCE BROWSER taken from your YouTube video…. LINK and IMPORT
[Jonathan Reed] “1) which video files am i bringing into MC, “
Up to you….and the director. Are you going to use the newly made clips from RESOLVE as your master clips, or will they want you to somehow relink to the camera original for online. If you can use those clips from Resolve as masters, use those. If they want the camera masters, then LINK to those, and transcode for offline cutting.
[Jonathan Reed] “A) XDROOT -> CLIP that due to you saying THANK GOD THEY HAD THAT (I’m assuming that’s the file I needed all along, the one that is directly out of the camera and won’t cause me any issues to use) Select all those clips with the setting of LINK OR IMPORT then click IMPORT in the bottom right? again, there’s no discernible way that i can see to make that “IMPORT” button say “LINK” “
When you switch the option I point out to LINK, you’ll have the LINK option, and not IMPORT.

When I deliver to my audio mixers, who cut using ProTools, I give them two things…
1) AAF export of ONLY the audio, and either with 2 second handles, or the full clips…depends on the mixer. And either embedded in the AAF, or sometimes just linked to the files, but most often embedded
2) A Quicktime export (stereo mix) compressed H.264 with window burn timecode.
But typically I ask them exactly what they want before I send anything.

OK, with the QT files you rendered out of Resolve…don’t just click on the DAVINCI folder…go and select all the clips. For QT, you need to select the clips themselves, not the folder containing them. Selecting the folder only works if you are brining in from the tapeless media originals.
But I see your option in the Source Browser is set to IMPORT. Yes, for that setting, you need to select the clips. Flip it to LINK and you should be able to choose the root level folder of the tapeless unorganized backup (thank god they had that) and then hit LINK…that should bring them all in, linked…then you transcode.

If it’s simple cuts and dissolves, and reframing, those will transfer fine via XML. So export the XML from Premiere, bring all the media into Resolve, import the XML…color correct, and then render out new media with handles and XML it back to Premiere…there’s an option for that in the Delivery page.
Why go back to Premiere for final output? That’s what Resolve is made for.

[Mike Most] “The proper name for the camera department position is “Digital Imaging Technician.””
HA! Brain fart. At least I was close, and there is such a thing as Digital Intermediate…

Alas, no. You need the files they were working with. But the names don’t match the raw? When making proxies, the file names should be the same, but with PROXY at the end.
