I just realized the RED render line above the clip is relating to audio…so im guessing the problem lies somewhere in the audio format that the clips are being transcoded with before being brought into final cut pro.
any suggestions?
the timeline says 48khz and the clips say 48khz so i dont think its that…

Here is the video tutorial i watched and did exactly what it said… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7mKpKRLfMI
Otherwise…here is a list of steps i’ve taken…
1. Plug iPhone 4 into computer, open Image Capture.
2. Export all video from phone to folder.
3. Open Compressor. Select video clips.
4. Select ProRes442, drag to video files.
5. Select destination folder and apply to video clips.
6. Click submit. Wait for transcoding to finish.7. Transcoding finished. Open Final Cut Pro.
8. Setup sequence settings to match the video setting I just created.
9. Import freshly transcoded video.
10. Try to drag video to timeline, and then it still wants everything to be rendered…I’m using Final Cut Studio 2 if that matters.

Yep, ive been using ProRes 442 1280×720. Ive tried 24p and 30p etc…
I also use Image Capture as well, not iPhoto, although i have tried iPhoto because im getting THAT desperate…
This is kind of crazy because i go down the row of the sequence stats and the clips stats in the browser and they are all identical, yet i still have to render…

There is two settings for ProRes442 right next to eachother and there appears to be no difference…I dont know why? It still asks me to change my timeline settings to the clip settings after i drop the clips in the timeline, but it seems to work without rendering now…I get dropped frames and stuff on playback though…any tips on how to fix this??
Also, do you know the reason why Compressor cant just work and you have to use a third party application to be able to transcode to edit the video in Final Cut Pro?

wow that sure takes the sting out not being allowed to re-sell my academic version of avid xpress pro that i never really ended up using at all.
when i went in there and asked them for it the guy who was helping me was like “ummm…what?” he asked a manager and they both sort of looked confused to even be asked about final cut studio (must not be all that common to sell copies of $1200 software) but i showed them the student discount price one of the computers in the store and they both were doing the “ohhhhh yeah….um….i remember now….” type of thing. they went in the back and grabbed real version and i was on my way within a couple of minutes.
i never even realized there was a different version for academic until reading this thread! i just thought the discount was a discount, not modified software in any way. oh well, that makes me feel good now!
so when FCS3 comes out it will only cost me $499 or whatever the upgrade price is for a new full version?

yeah well i re-did the conversions in DV50 and i didnt notice much difference in quality but its working just as well so im happy. I’ve realized the original dvd quality is pretty bad to begin with and the video on the computer is almost the same level of quality.
hopefully i can get some other, better filmed games of him….because this stuff is pretty crappy.

well i reformatted my external drive and it works great with the big files now.
hopefully i can get a firewire drive soon but i cant right now.
when you say QT DV50 do you mean “DVPro50 NTSC” ??? because thats all i see that is close to “QT DV50” in both Compressor and MPEG Streamclip…i assume its the same thing?

i went to the apple store with my student ID and they went and grabbed a copy of Final Cut Studio 2 and just cut the price from $1200 to $699. No issues there.

yeah, gotcha. well i dont really plan to try it anyways just because im on a wireless network and that is apparently not a great idea for this type of thing.
BUT! thats a very cool thing to keep in mind for the future. good to know what it actually does.

i did a search and found a thread that pretty much solved my problem until i ran into another one…
each of the VOB files, when converted to DV in Compressor, go over the 4.1GB file limit or whatever the size limit is and so they dont finish converting and the tail end of it is cut off. anyone know how to get them down to size or to increase the file size limit on my external drive? should i do it onto my system drive? woudl that have a larger file size allowance?
