If you have an Apple Store-they can give you the discounts as well. (although some stores are less familiar than others.)
Also, you local student bookstore would be able to offer you the discount.

    Good Luck,

Go to the Apple Store or just call 1-800-MY-APPLE.

My friend who works at the Apple Store tells me that they do not carry the Academic version in the Apple Store. Apparently they come in different boxes one with the retail license and code and one with the academic license and code.

You can order the academic one online or at most college bookstores though.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

Check around at your college before you order directly from Apple. Some colleges (particularly big ones) have negotiated better academic version discounts with Apple, so you might be able to save a couple hundred by ordering through your school. Good luck!

i went to the apple store with my student ID and they went and grabbed a copy of Final Cut Studio 2 and just cut the price from $1200 to $699. No issues there.

[Shane McGee] “they went and grabbed a copy of Final Cut Studio 2 and just cut the price from $1200 to $699. No issues there.”

You may have gotten yourself a great deal Shane. Normally academic software packages aren’t upgradable to the real thing, but yours will be.

Wow, maybe I should get a commission???

wow that sure takes the sting out not being allowed to re-sell my academic version of avid xpress pro that i never really ended up using at all.

when i went in there and asked them for it the guy who was helping me was like “ummm…what?” he asked a manager and they both sort of looked confused to even be asked about final cut studio (must not be all that common to sell copies of $1200 software) but i showed them the student discount price one of the computers in the store and they both were doing the “ohhhhh yeah….um….i remember now….” type of thing. they went in the back and grabbed real version and i was on my way within a couple of minutes.

i never even realized there was a different version for academic until reading this thread! i just thought the discount was a discount, not modified software in any way. oh well, that makes me feel good now!

so when FCS3 comes out it will only cost me $499 or whatever the upgrade price is for a new full version?

Exactly!!! However, after seeing this thread, the Apple Police will probably be arriving at your house any minute to arrest you and send you to Apple prison. I hear there are many cute chicks there, so it’s not so bad…
