September 22, 2008 at 10:47 pmYes, my 3 month old “academic” version has a little sticker on the otherwise identical box o’ books and discs that says “not upgradeable”.
So you lucked out.

March 25, 2009 at 11:01 pmI am able to buy a student version of Studio 2 for 600 with 5 Apple Pro Training books
* Final Cut Pro 6
* Final Cut Pro 6: Beyond the Basics
* Motion Graphics and Effects in Final Cut Studio
* Motion 3
* Soundtrack Pro 2Does it make sense to buy this and then if I want an upgrade I would just buy the student version of say Studio 3? Or would I have to in some way relink all of my projects to the new no-upgradeable version and it would be too much hassle?

There are no upgrades from one version to another with student pricing. They’re all full price from one version to the next.

July 24, 2009 at 1:09 pmYeah, this is interesting…
I purchased Final Cut Studio 2 late June 09. I bought it from the apple store on the web. I paid $699 for what I thought was the educational version. In the mail I received the box with the word “retail” on the UPC. I was told that I wouldn’t be able to get the updates with the educational version…doesn’t look like they gave me the educational version though.
