The kind folks over at the Apple forums steered me in the right direction:
    https://www.sony.ca/xdcamex/software.htm
From there, I downloaded the “Log and Transfer Utility for MAC Version 1.0.” Once I installed it, I can now easily Log & Transfer Sony EX3 clips directly into Final Cut Pro.

By the way, we shot the same scene with the Sony EX3, the Panasonic AG-HMC150, and the Panasonic HVX200. They all look very good, but the Sony looks gorgeous!

Sorry, in my original post I misspelled the name of the folder. It was “BPAV.” I did not rename the folder or anything. I just copied the BPAV folder directly from the Sony Ex3 card to my hard drive.

I created a new folder on my hard drive called “SonyEx3.” I copied the BPAV folder (and all its contents) directly from the Sony card into the “SonyEx3” folder on my hard drive. Did I do anything wrong?

Checked it with my other FCP project on my other drive; you solved the problem!

A philosophical question: I would guess that the System Preferences – Displays – Color – Profiles should affect the “look” of the entire screen; and they do; some profiles make it a little warmer, some a little brighter, etc. Why would the Profile affect only the Viewer and Canvas windows in FCP?

    It makes you think…

Thank you again for being persistent enough to help me solve this problem (which no one at the Apple FCP forum had any idea how to fix).

I believe you have solved this problem! I opened System Preferences, Displays, Color. The only profile that appeared was “iMac.” I unchecked “Show profiles for this display only,” and 3 other profiles appeared. Then, when I selected any of those – including “iMac,” the problem of the white windows in FCP and DVD Studio Pro seemed to go away! I need to check this with my project which is stored on my other drive, but it looks very promising!

How in the world did you know to try such an obscure setting?

Found yet another similar problem – tried DVD Studio Pro – selected one of their menus – it appeared for an instant and then turned white. Imported one m2v file, tried to play it, it turned white. Something in the new FC Studio is making all the videos appear white. But videos show fine in the Quicktime Player.

Yes, checked the System Settings – Display – Color – there is a setting for the iMac.

Same problem here, except I have an iMac, so it shouldn’t be a problem with external monitors.

We run FCP 7 here at our school on our Mac Pros with no problem. But when I installed FCP 7 (we have a license to do that, so it’s legit) on my iMac, the browser and canvas show only white.

I tried importing various clips of various resolutions; I tried checking the alpha / rgb switch; I checked the clips in the Quicktime player (they play fine); I downloaded and installed the latest updates from Apple; I created a new User and tried that. I think I tried everything suggested in this forum; no luck.

A lot of people seem to have this same problem; any body heard from Apple?

You said “Ref movies work fine as long as you don’t movie the source clips” I don’t understand. What does it mean to “movie the source clips?”
The reason I ask, I’m also hoping to find a way to multiclip 5 video tracks which are full of gaps.

Uh, if you mean the black “letterbox” mattes at the top and bottom, I think your calculation is off. If you are working in 1080 HD, you don’t want your remaining image to be 276 high, you want it to be 803 pixels high. So you would subtract the 803 from 1080 = 277, then divide that by 2 = 139 pixels high for each matte. I hope this is right.
