Hi Richard:
I’m using Photoshop CS on a Windows XP system.James (seatlanta)

It’s good news and bad news time.
The GOOD news:
OK, the sound problem is solved. After reformatting all my drives and reinstalling EVERYTHING, the sound is now perfect. What was wrong? No idea. The BAD news:
Vegas 6.0 hangs and crashes every few minutes (see my other posting). So as I work on that problem, at least my clips will sound good until I have to start-up Vegas all over again.Just when I was thinking that things couldn’t be worse, the air-condiioning in my studio quit working, so I got to work on my computer in a 95-degree room. Life is good.

Hi Ed:
No, I have not tried it without Media Manager. But I will do it tomorrow.I’m thinking this is probably not a Vegas problem if no one else has similar stories. I’m reinstalling drivers one by one, then trying to edit after each new install. Maybe something got corrupted along the way.
Oh, there’s one other thing. This is not exactly the same system I’ve been using for a year (as I had previously said). I had been using Windows 2000 Pro, and I changed to Windows XP when I reformatted the drives. But this shouldn’t cause a problem.
I’ll keep at it, listening to suggestions, and trying everything until it’s fixed. Then I’ll let everyone know what happened.
Thanks.

Hi Donatello:
I’ve been using this exact system for more than a year with Vegas 5. It’s been very stable. I recently added one gig of new memory (for a total of 2 gig), but I have removed it and have gone back to my original one gig, just in case the newer memory was an issue. Apparently, it wasn’t. So now, the memory is like it has been for a year, and the hang-ups are still happening. The RAID controller is on the Gigabyte mainboard, and has been very reliable. It is installed using the Gigabyte drivers and setup CD. By the way, I reformatted every drive (all three) and started fresh. Then I did a clean install of Windows XP. Then I installed my basic drivers (sound, video, etc.). Then I installed Vegas 6.0 on drive C. All my video stuff is on drive D (250 g). Oh yeah, my RAID array is not being used right now because I was trying to eliminate it as a possible culprit.
I have now installed other software, such as Photoshop CS. Everything, other than Vegas, seems to be running fine.
I’d appreciate any suggestions or magic spells. It’s got to be something fairly simple, but right now, I’m out of guesses.
The system specs are listed below.
Thanks.

Thanks, guys, for the suggestions. I’ll take a look at possible resource conflicts. BUT if that were the case, wouldn’t I have experienced the problem with Vegas 5?
Also, the problem occurs ONLY if I have the external-device-preview checked. Wouldn’t a conflict cause a problem all the time?
Anyway, I’ll work on your suggestions today.
Thanks.

Hi:
After reading your questions and the various replies, my conclusion is that you may not need to upgrade. I’m happily using Vegas 5 and older copies of DVD Architect, Tsunami, and Excalibur.I’m a traditionalist–straight cuts, few effects, simple text menus, etc. I don’t care for glitz, and so far, Vegas 5 has really met my expectations. And I have not scratched the surface.
Keep in mind that I’m also an old guy who learned editing by cutting and gluing film, starting in the 1950s with 8mm. So non-linear editing is wonderful to me, and so simple that I can’t ever understand why anyone complains. It’s like using a word processor instead of an old typewriter (or quill pen).
As mentioned above, I have an older version of Tsunami and Excalibur and have found them to be quite helpful, and certainly worth the investment. The recent upgrade seems worthwhile, but I don’t like the upgrade price (incentive) because I haven’t owned the package for very long. The upgrade came out not long after I bought my version, so I guess I’ll just hang on for a while.
Best wishes, and good luck with your decision.

After reading Ed’s descriptions of some of the Vegas 6 improvements, I may have changed my mind about a Vegas upgrade. I think that project nesting and out-of-sync detection may make me go ahead and buy the new version. Both sound like real time savers.

Hi:
I use a Bella keyboard with a jog/shuttle knob and I love it. It came with keyboard decals for Vegas. Two days ago, I dropped a Panasonic monitor on it. Everything still works. Amazing! Here’s their site:
