That did the trick. As soon as I set the compressor to ProRes LT, everything in the timeline rendered with no degradation in the image.

There’s actually no zooming or resizing the pics on my part in FCP.

I import the PNG, drop it in the timeline, and it’s unrendered. When I put the scrubber over it, it looks good quality-wise in the canvas.

Then I render it and the quality goes down significantly.

I would assume this is what’s going to happen regardless EXCEPT that when I exported it unrendered the quality was high, and when I rendered the PNG and exported it the quality was low. So, I can get better quality if I export without rendering, but then can’t see me edited piece in fcp pro without rendering.

One other question if I might…

I had some PNG’s in the timeline and when I render, the quality drops. I test exported the files with & without rendering and sure enough, a sizable quality difference. If you don’t render in FCP, you can’t watch your edit correct? But if you render these image files you lose quality. Any way around this?
Does it matter whether you use PSD, PNG, or Tiff’s from Photoshop?

Thank you for taking the time. I had no idea of these various settings and it’s starting to make sense now.
As my question relates to PS stills, can you explain what you meant about ‘capturing the HDV as ProRes’?

Rafael, thanks for getting back.

Ok, I set the sequence settings to ‘square pixels’. The PSD files were still distorted but the PNG & Tiff files of the same image were showing correctly now. I’m starting to figure out what I did wrong.

ONE MORE QUESTION that’s troubling to me….

Why, when I render the PNG or Tiff files does the quality in the canvas degrade after rendering?

Does that mean if they show with square pixels in the browser that when dragged into the timeline it will show correctly?

Thanks for the info. That worked but one follow up question: I tried, in fcp 7 to increase the scale of the QT file from motion and it did some weird opacity, etc things.

Do you just have to do any changes in Motion for it to work?

Hi Kevin,
Yes, here’s what’s happened…
I sent the camera in to Canon – and thought afterward I had made a mistake – but it turns out that they sent it back stating the Card pin connector was broken and replaced.

The interesting thing is though….
I was using 4 16gb Delkin 450x CF cards and while the camera was in the shop purchased a 16gb Lexar 600x card (on the recommendation of Vincent Laforet’s site). When I got the camera back, the Delkin card(s) eventually froze up again, but I haven’t had a single instance of the Lexar 600x card doing it.

Needless to say, I assume it’s more of a speed issue, so I’m ordering another Lexar card.
I admit it’s not scientific only because I assume others have used slower cards with the Canon 7D and not had this problem.
