  • FCP 7 crashing when modifying master templates

Posted by Sean Winn on July 22, 2011 at 8:28 pm

Hi, I haven’t used FCP 7 for all that long, and just discovered the master templates from Motion that are available in fcp. My system has crashed repeatedly in the last hour and here’s the breakdown:

    – Brought in 7d footage thru log & transfer (test export of clip went fine)

    – Brought in master template lower 3rd that I changed in Motion, changed the text on the lower 3rd in fcp, brought into timeline over previously mentioned clip (crashed trying to export)

    – Tried another lower 3rd from master templates, and without changing anything, put it over my clip in the timeline (export went fine)

    – Changed the text on the same lower 3rd just mentioned (crashed trying to export)

So, it’s been crashing on repeated attempts and seems to only happen when I’ve ‘touched’ the lower 3rd to change the text in the viewer, or after I changed the colors in Motion. Something’s amiss for sure. Tested quick exports (no lower 3rd’s used) from other projects I have and they work fine – no crashes.

Working on Mac pro 8-core 16gb ram.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? I’m starting a project for a client and was hoping to use these built-in graphics.

    Thanks,
    Sean

Right-click on the file on the timeline and pick Open in Editor.
Change your text in Motion (the project pane from the upper-left could make it easier by showing a layer stack, pick the text layers and use the Inspector tab).
    Export from Motion.
Drop that Quicktime movie onto your timeline replacing the Motion template. If you end up with a black background you need to export from Motion using a codec with alpha such a ProRes4444 or Animation+.

    Jeff,
Thanks for the info. That worked but one follow up question: I tried, in fcp 7 to increase the scale of the QT file from motion and it did some weird opacity, etc things.

Do you just have to do any changes in Motion for it to work?

If you are overlaying an Animation+ or ProRes4444 it is possible there is some transparency wthin the file. Perhaps this is what you are noticing.
Alternatively you could save a .motn file and put that on your timeline, which allows you to right-click from the timeline and pick “Open in editor,” make your changes in Motion and save, then return to Final Cut to see the updated version.
