It’s actually a lot more powerful than that. It can detect and fix cadence breaks within the video. And because it’s so lighting fast, I’m guessing maybe it re-works the field structure and framerate without re-encoding the video. So this has a huge advantage if you’re using a lossy codec.

It’s absolutely ridiculous to think Apple would sell it off. Believe me, they’ve got all kinds of wet dreams for future production tools. Wait until they start trying to replace mice with multitouch. They probably have concepts for editing systems like in “Minority Report”.

Essentially yes. It adds dupliacte frames to make it 59.94. Dupe frames are flagged, so that when you capture it you can remove them automatically and have a 23.98 capture.
Again, I don’t know much about the norms of having a telecine done. I can’t imagine that a facility doing high-def telecines would not be able to them at 23.98.

Don’t know about telecine, but DI is obviously more common these days.

You can remove pulldown during capture.

What are you monitoring on? A broadcast CRT it will look fine. The problem is that on progressive scan consumer televisions, it will look awful.

It’s XTREME-ly automatic. So automatic you don’t have to do anything :). Playing back a 23.98 sequence, your AJA outputs 29.97 by automatically adding pulldown.

Never. It will never look normal using that plugin. This is a plugin that stretches the image. My guess is that it stretches more on the edges than it does in the center, thus lowering the negative effect. Regardless, I have exceptional distaste for this kind of thing and I doubt it would pass QC for many broadcasters unless you are using it sparingly. Masters should be delivered in the original aspect ratio. If it must be 16:9, and it must fill the screen, then the only proper solution is to zoom and crop.

By pulling out, Avid gives off the image of being the company for the elite. The “real” professionals. Regular Joe’s off the street shouldn’t even know what Avid is. Setting up a giant booth at a show filled with technology fans who aren’t really serious customers may have been counterproductive for them (in their minds at least).
So while they take the “high road”, the company that also makes iPhones, iDVD, and Widgets would be left at NAB with a giant booth and nothing new and exciting show off. Expectations would be unreasonably high every year and they’d get bad PR and a fall in share prices when the biggest announcement is something simple like Final Cut 6.1 featuring REDCODE support. Maybe Apple saw this coming, and decided to do the same.
Just a stupid theory of course.
Or maybe both brands are so recognizable, both Avid and FCP are so well known, having booths at NAB does more harm than good. Perhaps if you’re Apple, why attract thousands of customers to a show where they discover 20 different alternatives to Final Cut? Products many have never heard of (Edius for example). A place where Apple is nothing more than a big fish in a very big pond. Same could be said about Avid.

Again, I have a strong suspicion that these two updates are meant to address the problems people were having with QT 7.4.
