    You’re getting terrible advice. You think going with Openfiler is free just because it’s free to download???? Think again. iSCSI is no different than fibre channel. It’s not network file sharing – it’s a real SAN. In other words you can’t share a drive with multiple clients unless you have expensive software like Xsan or MetaSAN managing the write permissions. At the very least you’ll need to spend $600 per client for MetaSAN. This is far more expensive than MetaLAN (from the same company).

    That said, it won’t work anyways. Openfiler does not work well with GlobalSAN AT ALL. I say that from first hand experience.

    The least expensive option is using Apple File Sharing using a real Mac as a server, a managed switch, and an IT expert who knows how to tune the TCP settings and the network environment for video editing. This is essentially what Walter and Bob’s articles are about.

    There’s a ton of important information you’ve left out. Don’t think anyone can help you without knowing certain things.

    1. What frame rate was your source footage originally shot on?
    2. What frame rate was it converted to when you captured it? The DV footage is probably 29.97. So if it was shot on film, then some form of pulldown was added. There are different types and you’ll have to identify what it is. It could be 24pA “Advanced Pulldown” which if it is then you’re very lucky because it would be very easy to convert that footage back to 23.98.
    3. What format is your sequence?
    4. Are you mixing different frame rates in the same sequence? Note, I’m not talking about the frame rate FCP thinks it is. I’m talking about the original frame rate the footage was shot on.
    5. What format are you delivering on? Film, tape?
    6. How is this going to be shown? Broadcast, DVD, web, theatrical?
    7. Are you using this online facility to re-assemble your footage, or are they just color grading it?

    Have you tried exporting it to HDV using the QT Player?

  • Sounds like nothing is wrong with the footage. Something is wrong with your computer or with Final Cut. Try regular trashing preferences, repair permissions, etc. Also make sure you do not have something called “Perian” installed on your machine.

    The flags can be changed in the FCP browser. Change the pixel aspect to DV instead of square. Other than that, I don’t have an answer for you. FCP is absolutely not meant to use AVI files.

    And what about the anamorphic flag or pixel dimension flag? You sometimes have to tell FCP how to interpret an imported video.

    FCP is not meant for AVIs. You need a program that re-wraps the DV stream from AVI to MOV. Any regular conversion is no good as it will re-compress it and cause severe quality loss.
