  • Glitch when Exporting from FCP

    Hello Everyone!

I have looked far and wide on the internet and in the forums on this site for someone who has faced the same issue as me, and have come up dry.

I am attempting to export an HDV sequence from FCP v5.1.4 using the Export using Quicktime Conversion setting. I have uploaded a screen shot of the settings I am using here: https://studentpages.scad.edu/~kstein22

After the export finishes, I find what I describe as glitches when there is a transition. Rather than have me attempt an explanation of what is happening, I have uploaded a sample file here. This is the first transition in the film: https://studentpages.scad.edu/~kstein22

In trying to figure the cause of the problem, I have used different settings in the compression type settings in the quicktime export. They have all produced the same glitch. Another interesting note: when I exported the sequence via compressor (MPEG-2 for DVD) the sequence exported fine. Also when I did a test and exported H.264 for DVD Studio Pro in compressor, the glitch was not present.

I am at a loss to fix this issue. What I am trying to do with the sequence is export it at the best quality so I can move it to another FCP station for export to tape.

Thank you all very much for your time and have a great day!

Have you tried exporting it to HDV using the QT Player?

    Thank you for your response.

Can you describe what you mean by exporting by using Quicktime Player? Is there a way to open a FCP sequence in Quicktime Player and export it from there?

    Thanks

    Kyle

Export a QT movie first using current settings.

    Hi,
I too am having terrible glitches, mostly at transitions, and I am exporting a QT movie with current settings (as I read that is the way to keep your full resolution). The glitches are blocky, acid-trip like glitchy visuals, as if I wrapped my real footage with some sort of messed-up CGI, because you can see the forms vaguely underneath all the blocks. Also, I am getting a couple seconds of solid green. The audio is fine.
My project is standard NTSC-DV, 29.97, and two of the clips were originally 864×480, but I turned them into 720×480 files using QT Conversion before putting them into my timeline.
Help! My editing skills are basic and I don’t understand what all the different codecs do. Thank you!!!!

    Mandy,
I had the SAMMMMMME problem. Did you ever find a solution???

I have been having the same problem. Audio is fine but glitches on video and occasionally solid green. And it seems to struggle mostly with transitions within the timeline. Seems to happen only with exproting out with Quicktime Movie (Using Current Settings). Did anyone ever get a solution???

I have been working around this glitchiness for some time, and currently exporting what should have been a simple project in pieces– its like FCP remembers that you used a transition, and even once you’ve given up on that, the glitch is in. And the only workaround I have found is exporting segment by segment, then re-assembling those segments on a timeline (or even in other software! mpeg streamclip will re-assemble multiple segments if you open all the files together in the correct order). Anyway, there is probably a more elegant fix but I am going with what has worked in the past. glta

I’ve found if you export not as ‘current settings’ from the ‘export quicktime movie’ dialog box, the issue of green glitches during blank periods in the timeline and/or transitions jumping can be neutralized.

Specifically, I was working with HD footage (1920 x 1080 @ 30fps) and exported via ProRes 1920 x 1080 @ 30fps. I also duplicated the sequence prior to exporting. Sometimes that helps.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I believe I’ve been experiencing the same thing:

    https://www.vimeo.com/25875539

I did more troubleshooting today, and it seems that I have found the issue.

My workflow includes transcoding my .h264 files in mpegstreamclip using the prores 422 codec. For those of you whom don’t know, mpegstreamclip has 2 options for the prores 422 codec, and ordered from top to bottom they are:

    Prores 422(HQ)
    (and)
    Prores 422

Mpegstream clip does not delineate between the two options in their codec labeling, and this has been a source of some of my confusion. If you check your individual clip(s) attributes from within FCP (by scrolling across the browser window, and expanding the “compression” tab) you can see if you transcoded your clips with the HQ or standard version.

FCP is showing me that that the difference between clips converted at these two codecs is about 8mb/sec. [Prores 422(HQ) averages 22.0mb/sec while Prores 422 averages 14.1mb/sec] I can see no difference (visually) between the two clips (after rendering, played back from the timeline.

With this knowledge, I can now reproduce the problem using identical footage across multiple computers. If anyone has more conclusive evidence I’d love the additional input! Hope this helps!
